Here is the 411 folks. I recently purchased this remote and was a little nervous about the purchase considering that all the reviews I read were mixed. There were some concerns about freezing and program issues. Let me just run down my set up before I begin. I have...
36" Sony Vega TV
27" Zenith
Bose LS12 complete surround sound environment.
Technics 5 Disc CD changer
Pioneer 5 disc DVD player
Zenith VCR
JVC 5.1 Dolby Digital receiver.
As you can see, I am not a man for a single brand. I do not buy names, I buy performance and product. You don't produce results? You don't get my money.
That said, I have used this remote straight out of the box with no programming for the Sony TV (obviously). I then programmed my Zenith, CD, DVD and Receiver with no trouble. The best way to program is to avoid the presets. I find that using presets usually does not give you the desired model that you may own (missing buttons, does not encompass entire unit). The "Learn" function however is my new best friend. I name a button, press learn, hit the button I named and then the button I want programmed in. That's it, done, cannot be simpler. However, do not make the same mistake I made. I programmed the button before naming it, you cannot effectively program this way. Buttons need to be named before the function is programmed. This took a moment of reading before figuring it out so save the time, don't do it.
Sensitivity - People have mentioned how sensitive it is. I am in agreement. the touchscreen is sensitive but you can program hold times meaning if you assign 2 seconds to a button, it won't perform the function for 2 seconds. But you do have to hold the button down. I tried explaining this to someone and they hit the button and waited but nothing happened. HOLD IT DOWN! :)I personally just deal with the sensitivity. I am one that wants the program to run as soon as I touch the button. But that is me.
Price - You cannot beat it for the price. I got it for $86 but have seen it cheaper since. It is LCD, it is touchscreen and it will control just about everything you own with the exception of Bose because of the radio signal rather than the IR signals. I will never understand why they do not update to IR.
Overall - A good remote even with it's size. I am a Sci-Fi fan and sit it right on my arm rest and punch the buttons as though it is a captian's seat. That works for me. Someone referred to it as a "tricorder" I laughed because it is so true. If you like Star Trek, you'll enjoy this remote. :)
