The Bottom Line: good for a money pit...buy something a little more reliable

| mammajamma's Full Review: Sony STR-DE975 5.1 Channels Receiver |
I bought this unit back in feb. '02 in order to replace yet another sony receiver. I was convinced to buy this one when I saw the reasonable price (399) and the power output (110*5) compared to my previous one. I also bought an in-store extended warranty after experiencing what happened to my older one. When I first brought it home and hooked up, I was amazed with the volume of sound. Movies were so clear and almost felt like I was in a theater eventhough I only had a little 25" TV. Now, I live in an apartment and the walls are very thin, so I was immediately aware of the limits I could turn this thing to before I would get an angry pounding on my door from a neighbor. I could turn it up to 20 and the walls would be shaking. After about 8 months, my unit went mute and PROTECTION popped onto the screen. I brought it in and they told me that usually happens if a speaker wire is crossing or one of the speakers are about to blow. It took 31/2 months to fix. within that time, I bought some new tower speakers in hopes of correcting the problem. Not at all... When I got it back, I immediately noticed the dramatic drop in volume. Before, I could turn it up to 20 and that was awesome, now, I had to turn it up to at least 30-35 to get the same results. Now getting very annoyed, I sent it back again. The employee said it is normal for a receiver to drop in wattage after normal use and attempted to sell me a $250 circuit breaker. After spending upwards of $550 for the receiver and warranty, I expect the unit to last at least a little longer than 1 year before the thing goes T.U. I don't know, maybe I am a little cheap, but I do know this. Next time I am looking at another brand.
