Pros: The diversity in characters, areas and weapons!
Cons: Not very much replay value!
The Bottom Line: Vigilante and Interstate 76 are both great games, but after you`ve played this game, they will be BORING! UNEVENTFUL! and most important of all, they won`t be BLACK!
fancycrap's Full Review: Twisted Metal: Black for PlayStation 2
In this game you and your car are a deadly weapon. And I don`t mean in the GTA3 way, where you run over people. I mean you got a machine gun hooked up on it, you have rockets, oil barrels, richochets, radar and many other lethal weapons.
The Story
It is not really important, but from what I`ve got of the game, this is the plot:
You enter a tournament with a car of your choice, where you meet up with other competitors. When you have proven yourself worthy you will meet the first of two "bosses". When you have defeated you must once again prove worthy to meet the final, and biggest of them all. When you defeat him, you have won the tournament.
Gameplay
The gameplay is pretty much the same if you play story mode, endurance (one on unlimited enemies, you kill one, there`s another one waiting for you), and the multiplayer action. Shoot and destroy as many cars as you can. So it is not very challenging except from the actual destruction of the cars. This is not a mind game to say the least. It`s so called braindead action, but it`s just as much fun. The controls are preset in three different ways, known from the older versions. There is no problem adapting to them either if you are a "experienced" gamer. The handling of the car, and the realism of it, is not very good. It is almost impossible to dodge other projectiles fire at you. It`s got two handling features, brakes and the tight turn. The brakes are really bad, sure they stop the car, but it takes a while and you cannot do a slide with them. The tight turn feature lets you slide, but in an uncontrollable fashion. So going down a street at top speed and trying to tightly turn into a back alley, is just about impossible without extensive training and great feel.
Graphics
The graphics are not great. But they are not that bad either. They are good enough to keep the game at a realistic yet unrealistic level. This makes it more fun.
As you might expect from every new game it has of course improven from the earlier versions. But I wouldn`t want too great graphics in this game. I feel that in this game it doesn`t matter if you get a sort of graphical distance from it.
Sound
There is not much sound I can go on about except for the intro. The song played is Rolling Stones - Paint It Black. It is SO cool. The sound fx in the game, suits the graphic perfectly. Not too realistic and not too unrealistic. I would say the same here as I said in the graphics section.
Characters and Areas
As I have written in the pros section, these have a great diversity. I you have played earlier versions of the game you will meet a lot of known faces, such as Mr. Grimm, Spectre, Warthhog and many others. Some of them have new special weapons and some of them don`t. Every character is assigned a certain special weapon, and special attributes to their car. Some are fast and light armoured with hi-damage weapons, while others are slow and heavy armoured, but have special weapons that don`t do that much damage. Some are target seeking, while others demand deadly precision.
As you meet certain demands, or high scores within the different games you will receive new characters as well as new areas. The areas however, has been modified. Though some of them you might recognise. The great thing is there are different sizes of the areas you can fight in. Choose a small one, and you`ll have a high intensity fight, pick a big one and you`ll fight in more of a hide & seek way. Both is great fun.
Misc.
One of the improvements from the earlier versions is that you make a much greater impact on the landscape surrounding you. In the older versions you could fire a missile, or just crash straight into a wall without noticing it on the wall itself. Here you can crash windows, blow up airvents, shoot down a carousel and many other things. Granted you could do some of those things, but they were in special places. In Black you can find them everywhere.
Another new thing is the power ramp, which you can drive on top of and recharge your power.
All in all this is a game for someone looking for some serious car driving action. Not just racing.
This game mixes the best of both worlds, GT3 and GTA3 crashed into a melting pot called TWISTED METAL: BLACK
