| frigid_heiress's Full Review: Sony VAIO Digital Studio PCV-RX580 PC Desktop |
I have had my machine Since March of 2002. So far so good. Only problems that I've had to contact customer support about were software related issues I got myself into, and the Bios 1004 upgrade that they posted on their site for users to run. I simply had never done a BIOS upgrade myself before, and knowing that if you screw it up you can essentially kill your computer, I didn't want to guess at anything during the process. Unlike the one reviewer I found Sony Tech support to be quite nice and helpful. This is my 3rd Sony Vaio PC, and only one time in the last 8 years have I had a Sony Tech support person approach rudeness. I just got off the line with them as quickly as I could, and re-dialed them and got another nice one. With a company as large as Sony, unfortunately you'r going to have a bad apple or two that's overlooked but I think in the main, they are nice and helpful.
Ah, I did have one issue and that is that the DVD-It Program that is supposed to come pre-installed on my PC wasn't present on it once I booted it up. I did check their support site and fortunately the omission was already noted there, and the process to contact them and recieve a copy of the program on CD was there for me to follow. It did take them 3 weeks however, to send me the CD and that was after I had faxed them a copy of my origional reciept, a slightly anoying requirement, but somewhat understandable. They could certainly been quicker on the shipping out of the CD for me, but I got it in the end.
I'm an online gamer so a top of the line graphics card is a must for me. I found the nVidia GeForce TnT w/ 64MB graphics card to be unworthy of the system. Seems like they could have given it at least a GeForce 2 MX, though I would have replaced that as well.
With a newly installed GeForce 4 6400 AGP graphics card, the system really hums along. quickly. Additionally, I was astounded by the improvement of not only the speed it loaded pages, and the very noticeable increase in frame rates when playing online games, but also the quality, detail, depth, and color of the graphics on 3D game is huge, it is immediately noticeable, and worth the investment. If you were to invest in any upgrade in this system after purchase I woudld recommend upgrading the graphics card.
Since, then I have also added a Creative Labs Audigy Gamer Sound card. That has allowed me to play 5.1 channel suround sound music from my computer to my suround sound Yamaha reciever. For sound that is coming from a PC that doesn't have a power supply or internal cables that is really designed to provide high-end audio, it sounds amazingly good.
All in all I'm very happy with my Sony computers and quite honestly I don't even consider other brands after the great success I've enjoyed with the 3 I already have.
Hope this was helpful.
