| siralfie's Full Review: Sony VPH D50HTU CRT Projector |
Bought my D50 Five years ago.
Flawless. Go with the built in line doubler.
Compared to DLP or LCD units this thing is a MONSTER.
Incredible contrast ratio, true blacks, multiple sync levels, etc. Short of the DLIA JVC for 15g's, no digital set up can touch it. The New Sony Qualia maybe, but it's 25g's! You can get one of these for about 2g's used. Even if the CRT's are shot (which would be unique) they're only about $500 bucks each to replace, and they last for TEN YEARS or more! Compare that to a 400-1000 dollar 'bulb' some of the DLP or LCD unit's go through a YEAR!
This is one of those technologies that is being phased out because it costs SONY (and others) too much to produce them vs. profit. Who cares? It's the best in its class for Home theatre buffs, end of story! Eventually DLP or DILA will get to the CRT's level, but I wouldn't hold my breath (unless you've got the 30-50 g's to buy the 'best in class' DILA right now). For the price? You cannot beat it. Trust me, each year I WANT to find a DLP that can meet or exceed the level I'm already enjoying. Nothing yet. Yet ;-)
