| thegeoff's Full Review: Sony VAIO GR370 PC Notebook |
I've been using my Sony GR for almost 4 years now and it's still serving me well. For anyone looking to buy one used I highly recommend it. I am a student in college and the laptop is in class with me almost every day. Despite a hard life, it has held up well and I hope it will last through college. I believe the Sony build quality was far superior to anything else 4 years ago and if I were to buy a new laptop today, I would buy this exact model again.
Hard drives wear out under use, and mine did a few months ago. As with any laptop part, this was an expensive part to buy. A good design by sony, however, made it easy for me to replace the part myself.
The factory battery lost it's life long ago. Again, batteries are expensive no matter what brand. With a new battery (as of about two weeks ago) and my old one in the 2nd slot I get about 4-5 hours of taking notes/surfing/chatting during class.
The CD burner/dvd drive still works well. My modem did go out about a year ago, though a PCMCIA replacement was much cheaper than replacing the factory sony part.
Overall it's a great laptop. I found the speakers a bit disappointing to have SONY stamped on them, but if you want good sound from a laptop buy headphones. Many of my friends also purchased new laptops for college and all of them have been forced to upgrade due to severe hardware failure. My Sony is still cranking and I have little desire to "upgrade" yet. Though this laptop isn't great to play games on, it's perfect for itunes, watching DVD's, typing papers, taking notes, surfing, and whatever other standard task you can think of. If you want power and massive storage, buy a desktop. If you want a reliable notebook computer for use as such, but this or any other Sony.
