Sony Vaio GR370
I bought my Sony Vaio GR370 about 10 months ago and since then have really enjoyed the overall performance of this machine. The 15" monitor is more than enough to satisfy your eyes. It comes with all the standard features of Vaio including: 256 MB ram and a 30 GB hard drive which should be plenty for the average user. It also features a CD-RW/DVD combo drive combined with a 1.13 Pentium III processor for the brains. The upgradeability of this laptop was nothing more than any others except for the dual battery option which I haven't taken advantage of yet, but I plan to in the future. The dual-slot for the battery may also be substituted for a second hard drive as well. As soon as I opened the box, the Vaio came roaring out with blazing speeds. It flashed through all the pre-installed software which included: MS Word, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Picture Gear, and Movie Shaker. I do some web design on the side and you could not ask for a better compatibility with web design software. I do not leave home without my laptop. I have not had any inconveniences when traveling with this lite 6.8 pound powerhouse.
Although this machine is my first recommendation for a college student, video editor, or even a business owner, it had a few short comings for sound editing, which just happens to be my cup of tea. As stated above, the vaio is only upgradeable to 512 MB of ram which for sound editing is not a great deal. In programs such as: Acid Pro 4.0, Sonar XL, Cakewalk Home Studio, and Sound Forge 5, I noticed an unusual amount of freezing and unresponsive program reboots. I also noticed that the overall volume and sound quality of the speakers are not all that great, so I do not recommend this for the Audio Guru.
