| jojabr's Full Review: Sony VAIO SRX77P/C PC Notebook |
I was looking for an ultra-light notebook computer. I searched the internet over and over again, and finally came up with two models: Fujitsu P-2040 and Sony PCG-SRX77. By me writing this review, you can probably figure out which laptop won in my mind. I thought that the integrated Wi-Fi and extra - long battery life was more important that a slightly bigger screen and integrated DVD/CD-RW drive at the base price. The SRX77 was also more available to me because it was at the CompUSA store next to my house. Anyway, I'm glad that I got the SRX77. It's got some really great features, like the battery life and size/weight. The Wi-Fi also works great in my school. There are lots of ports to plug stuff in. There’s USB, headphone and mic, LAN, i.LINK, PC Card, Memory stick, and a few others. The keyboard is a bit small, but you get used to it after just a few days. The factory image on the hard drive is slow, so you might want to format it and install everything from scratch, like me. I also merged the two partitions. The main partition was 7 gigs, and the other was 10 gigs. Weird. So now I have a nice big 18.6 GB hard drive to work with. The hard drive is big, but it's loud. It clicks and skips and thinks and parks and beeps and drives you nuts. I got the firmware revision from Dell's website for their Latitude model with the same noisy drive, and it helps *a little bit*. The unit comes with an external CD-ROM drive that plugs into the PCMCIA slot, which is bootable, and I installed Win XP from it easily. What would have made this machine even more perfect would be a DVD/CDRW combo drive. The screen runs at XGA resolution (1024x768), but it looks kind of small in 10.6 inches. Integrated graphics are fine for Word and e-mail and internet, but just plain bad for 3D games. If you plan to play a lot of 3D games on the go, look at another model. This one's not for you. Well, to sum it up, this is a really nice little portable laptop that has some really great features that can help you a lot while you are on the road.
