| jubead's Full Review: Sony VAIO GRX570 PC Notebook |
I have had this laptop approximately 6 months. I purchased the product fully loaded. 40GB HD/512Mb memory/CD/DVD ROM/extended warranty/replicator port and WinXP professional with office XP Professional
I purchased online at Sony Style, but beware. If you are purchasing via a business, you need to call or you are automatically put into the consumer group and are treated like dirt. Sony consumer and business groups have different customer service and sales. Also, sales in consumer group tell you what you want to hear vs. the "truth". However, my product did arrive promptly. The product shipped within a day, but ground shipping took 8 long days.
Included in the purchase:
CD/DVD or battery cover - so you can remove one or other to lighten the load.
Sony System Recovery Disk - set which restores your computer back to factory installed software and settings, Office XP Professional CDs
Quick Start Book,
WinXP Professional basic setup guide created for Sony - not much use if you know your way around operating systems and computers
Notebook specs.
Additional purchase - replicator port which was $189.00 and then it doesn't include an A/C adapter, therefore, you need to purchase another A/C adapter or use the one that comes with the computer--which defeats the purpose of a replicator port.
PROS: 16.1" screen, excellent display, crisp and clear. Sound is fair and acceptable, CD/RW-DVD Combo drive, memory stick, modem v90, two type I or II PC cards or 1 type III with card bus support, 3 USB ports, i.Link/firewire port, internal Ethernet port (10/100 base-TX), microphone and headphone jack, integrates well with other Sony products (i.e., Sony external DVD-RW drive). Processor is fast; keyboard section is comfortable (wrist area). It also integrated well with my wireless devices.
CONS: Personal - glide instead of mouse (like on the IBM). The location of jog feature is in the way of the mouse device (suppose to help you expedite functions on the computer but find it difficult and a pain to use. I also keep turning on the jog feature accidentally and interrupts everything, and closing the jog feature is problematic, since you need to close with the mouse vs. a button. I also found the computer to be on the heavy side and not a good traveling computer at all. The accessories are not cost effective. Also found the A/C adapter to be very large, bulky and heavy.
WHY AM I KEEPING THIS PUPPY? Well, I am an IT Consultant. I store a lot of information regarding my customers networks, user guides I create for my clients and a lot of diagnostic information. I do not travel with it and use it in a different capacity then a business or personal computer user. Because of the work I do, I am in love with the 16" screen and it eliminates all the CONS I listed. I find the processing speed great, the product durable, sleek and kinda fun and for the ego trip it has made some lasting impressions. If you travel a lot, I would try the lighter VAIOS or IBMs (T series). I think the biggest con is the weight and large screen size-doesn't fit most computer cases. My professional users who travel often, I purchase the IBM T series or the VAIO FX series.
