| fuyian's Full Review: Sony VAIO R505EL PC Notebook |
With the Sony Slice docking station you have added an optical drive, which can give you the full DVD reader and CD-RW.
With the Slice, the r505 has 3 USB ports.
With the Slice, the r505 has 2 x Firewire ports.
the Sony has a floppy drive in the Slice
the Sony has a serial port in the Slice
the Sony has a parallel part in the Slice.
As a general observation I have found that Sony laptops are under-specced and expensive when compared to their competitors - BUT they perform faultlessly from Day One. I thought perhaps I was paying for the name, for the Sony logo, but I would now say that what I have paid for is Sony quality and quality control. I have never had a single problem with the machine I have owned - and I work it hard every day! Broadly, the hard drive is smaller, there is only half the RAM, no internal Wi-Fi card and the USB ports are not the 2.0 variety. That means that on my machine the sole PCMCIA slot is taken with the WI-Fi card. And all Sony laptops come with an impressive array of customised features and bundled software. From the installed desktop wallpapers to the automated Sony Vaio Support module that takes you straight to the support website, and checks for the latest information and updates. Ideally, I need to add some more RAM to my machine for the kind of work I use it for, but apart from that I have had faultless performance from the unit. The battery life is not marvellous - about 3 hours without the Slice. I always have the Slice plugged into the mains, especially for tasks like burning a CD.
