I am a loyal customer of SONY. Every time when I want to buy some electronic appliances or some digital sets, SONY will be the first brand I consider. I have kept this laptop for almost 1 year. So I want to share the great experience using this computer with other customers, because I am really very familiar with it.
As a college student, I would use computer very often to do my assignment and also for entertainment. So I decided to buy a laptop because my dorm is really very small and I can not put my desktop in that limit room. When I went to the mall, SONY R505EL attracted me immediately because of the fashionable design and the beautiful appearance. Then I told myself: this laptop will be mine! So I bought after several days.
I am sure most girls will like the appearance of this beautiful computer. But what I want to tell you is that R505EL does not only have a good appearance, but also strong functionalities. I want to share my feeling with other friends on the Internet, so I write this review to tell you my opinions on this computer. The followings are some detailed information. I hope my review can help you make a wise decision.
Configuration:
PIII-M 1.13GHz / 30GB / 256MB / CD-RW / DVD / 12.1" TFT / WinXP Home edition
The floppy disk drive and optical drive are on the docking station. It is a selected model also includes a back panel of many ports. The weight for my computer is only about 1.98kg with battery. So I can take it everywhere doing my presentations and reports with joys.
Application:
No matter how powerful a laptop is, most people will pay more attention on the basic function and applications, so do I. This model is easy to operate and its operation speed is very high. You can see the customized design everywhere. I like using Microsoft Word to do my homework, while enjoying beautiful music at the same time. For entertainment, the optical drive of my computer can read DVD smoothly. I can also play some 3D games with no problem on my computer. With the ventilation fan, R505EL controls the temperature very well. Even if I work on my computer for several hours, it is only a little bit warm.
Ports, Slots & Jacks:
With the different marketing positioning strategy, the target customers of VAIO R505EL are people who pursue fashion and more colorful lives. We can see that from the design of sufficient ports and jacks. The symbols for them are very easy to recognize. There are two USB ports, an Ethernet port, a phone line jack, i.LINK (IEEE1394) port, PC card slot, memory stick slot, monitor port, a headphone jack and microphone jack. All of them are on the two sides of the computer. There are also many ports on the docking station, which is a selected model. So I can link my computer with my DC, DV, mp3 player and use it to surf on the Internet freely.
LCD:
SONY is famous for high-quality LCD. The 12¡¯¡¯ XGA TFT LCD is also a feature of R505EL. The display of the whole screen is very bright, balanced and exquisite. Also, the color-display is very gorgeous, the edge of letter is clear and keen, and the pictures are smooth and fine. If necessary, you can adjust the brightness controls for the LCD display. To decrease the brightness, press Fn + F5 and then the down or left arrow key. To increase the brightness, press Fn + F5 and then up or right arrow key.
Keyboard, Touchpad & Jogdial:
R505EL has a full-size keyboard. It is very comfortable to press the keys, and there is only little noise while using. The touchpad can respond quickly and position accurately. User can set the functions of the touchpad to trundle pages up and down, left and right. The touchpad for my computer is very broad, I have no restriction while using. The Famous jogdial of SONY is moved to the middle of mouse¡¯s left and right button. It is even more convenient to operate. With the help of touchpad and jogdial, I can trundle, turn pages, operate some programs and explorer.
Battery:
The lithium-ion rechargeable battery can run about 2:38¡¯ if it is fully charged and uses power saving modes (The time may be different in different applications). The battery of R505EL has a feature of memorizing the charge cycles. User can check how many times your battery is charged through the battery information. There is a battery indicator on the right hand of touchpad. There are four status of the battery indicator. When it is on, the notebook is using battery power. When is single blinks, the battery is running out of power. When the indicator double blinks, the battery is charging. And when it is off, it means that the notebook is using AC power.
Post-purchase services:
SONY has a limited warranty statement distributing with a new laptop. The limited warranty on VAIO computer covers parts and labor against defects in material or workmanship for a period of three months from the original date of purchase. You can extend the warranty period for an additional nine months by registering your computer. After registering your computer, the limited warranty period is twelve months from the original date of purchase.
Limitations:
The sound quality of the speaker is not favorable. So I suggest that you can use a earphone to enjoy music and movies.
As the floppy disk drive and optical drive in on the docking station, many people will need it very often. But it is inconvenient and heavy to carry this docking station with the computer. I do not like this design very much.
The laptop is lack of infrared communication, which makes me dissatisfied.
