| JDinPA's Full Review: Sony Walkman WM-FX242ST Personal Cassette Player |
We recently added a Sony Walkman to our family. Instead of going with a CD Walkman we went with a Stereo AM/FM Digital Radio and Cassette Player. Having a walkman that allowed listening to both live radio broadcasts as well as escaping with recorded music seemed just more practical and useful for us.
We have CD players in the house, in the computer and in the car. My husband is a real wiz at recording from CD's onto cassettes for any music we'd like to hear in the walkman. Being able to keep up to date with what's going on in the world these days is important, so having the option of listening to a radio station for music and news updates fits what we were looking for in a walkman.
The Sony WM-FX242ST Walkman gives us good clear sound with nice clarity to both bass & treble. This unit came with high performance stereo headphones which do a pretty darn good job. The ear pads on the headphones are cushy and give a "I am there" feel to the music that you hear. Even with the volume turned up there is no distortion, hissing or warble to the notes or voices. There is minimal escape of the sound, but you can hear that music is going on if within a couple feet of the walkman in use.
This Sony does have an Automatic Volume Limiter System in place ~ this protects both the speakers and your ear drums from blasts of noise or music. This "Limiter" system will not make you lose out on any of the music, but will not allow dangerous levels to be attained ~ so if you have a teen (or hubby) who loves to turn it up and up and up, this may be just the walkman to help protect the eardrums!
This walkman also has Mega Bass ~ If you want mega bass you push the button. If you want regular sound without alteration you don't push the button. For me I like bass at pretty much the same level all the time ~ but I guess some people like to vibrate the sidewalk as they walk along.
The radio on this walkman is all Digital Tuning!!!. You can preset up to 40 digital stations, which breaks down into 30 FM and 10 AM preset choices. There is also an Auto Scan Tuning Preset which is useful if you are in a new area where you do not know where all the radio stations are located ~ the radio will scan to each receive-able station where you can choose to stay or continue with the scan. All of the scan functions and digital tuning are achieved with the touch of one button! Talk about easy to find and use!!!
The radio station you are currently tuned to, or the word "cassette" will appear in the Digital LCD window. During scanning for stations, the radio station numbers will change in the LCD window as they are found. Each station found will stay for 3-seconds before the scan moves on to the next station ~ to stay and keep that station in the pre-set memory, just hit "Enter" and you've captured it! If you ever do go beyond pre-setting the 30 FM stations, the walkman will start to replace the oldest saved presets with the new ones being put in.
The radio and cassette control buttons are in two separate spots on the walkman to avoid confusion. The FM/AM radio station controls are on the front face of the walkman as well as the LCD window. The cassette controls are on the left edge, over where the cassette cover opens up. The controls are simple, well marked and easy to find and use.
This walkman comes with a carry case and belt clip so you can take it along with you hands-free. This Sony Walkman also boasts an Anti-Rolling Mechanism to keep a stable tape speed no matter if you are jogging, walking, climbing stairs, chasing kids, swinging in the hammock, whipping that riding mower around rocks and trees, etc! lol So far so good here.
The Sony WM-FX242ST Walkman states that you can get up to 25 hours of battery life using cassettes with this system. For radio reception you can get up to 40 hours. It has been used daily for a few weeks now so I would say that claim is more than likely true. In case you worry about the strength of your batteries (two size AA by the way) there is a nice and convenient Battery Level Indicator right there on your LCD window!! No more worries about your batteries running out when you will need them ~ just keep track on the indicator!
Forget to turn things off? Well this walkman has an Auto Shut Off when using cassettes to help conserve your batteries. This is something common on most new cassette walkmans, and you'll find this feature here as well.
A few of the other specifications follow:
Frequency Range for FM is 87.5 to 108 MHz, For AM 530-1710 Khz
Weight of unit is a mere 5.3 ounces
Size is approx. 3 1/2 inches X 4 1/2 inches X 1 1/2 inches
Accessories with this walkman are stereo headphones, carrying case and belt clip
Warranty is just for 90 day parts and labor ~ a short warranty, but I wonder how many people have dropped and damaged their walkman in that time period!!!
If you are in the market for a portable cassette and/or AM/FM radio to accompany you or to be able to listen to music without disturbing others, check out the Sony WM-FX242ST Walkman with Digital Tuning ~ you will be more than happy with your selection, and you'll be bopping along in no time flat!
