jarturof's Full Review: Sony Walkman MZ-NH700 Personal MiniDisc Player
That's right, with Sony super advance format Atract3Plus you can store as many as 3.5Gb of songs in a single 1Gb HIMD.
I bought this great gadget to remplace my old (one year) NetMD, since I had a lot MD's I wanted to be able of still use them, and my NetMD was all wet, because in a Pool Party with my fellow college mates they throw me to the pool while using my NetMD.
Well being a previous user of MD's it was a piece of cake to start it, actually is so easy to use that everybody can do it without reading the manual (still recommended to read it, just in case)
Sonicstage is my favorite music player in the PC, if you have your music in order (folders, names, etc) like me, the program recognice this and arrenge everything according to you, and you can see the cover of the albums in the screen, which makes easier to choose the album to play.
Now tranfering music to the disc (HIMD) is faster than ever, since the player burn the disc at an impressive speed of 100x previous models have a speed of 32x, the only thing is that your music library must be converted to Atrac3Plus, so it takes time, but is worthy, since a 48Kbps Atrac3plus file has the same quality than a 128Kbps MP3, but is a forth of its size, that is why you can store 3.5Gb of music in a HIMD.
The sound quality is great, really impressive, better than iPod (well apple is a computer maker and sony make music devices since ever), the player comes with a wired control, just like many other sony products, the earphones are good, and in the box (special offer) came other earphones of far better quality and very futuristic look.
Also in the box came two cases for the player, one sport (arm band) and one more fancy (leather).
The player comes with a rechargable battery (AA) wich last at least 30 hours (according to me), and to charge it takes you less than two hours, and in case the battery run out on the go, you can use a normal AA battery.
The HIMD has an equalizer with several options, Pop, Rock, Classic, Unique (don't know what means) and two you can arrange.
You can navigate trough the music collection using groups (playlists), artist, album and genre. Also there is a search option located in a weird part of the menu called "useful", why Sony didn't put Search instead of "useful" no idea.
You have play modes like, repeat, shuffle (which apple didn't invent), 1 track repeat, A-B Repeat (could be a song or songs).
The screen of the device is very small, but is useful, it shows the necesary information you need to know about the song.
Now the part of the navigation Sony stole the idea from the iPod, with a wheel, which in this case is mechanical, is really good and easy to use, like the one in the ipod, in the center of the wheel there is a joystick, which if you press down is play or enter, and if you move it up and down is volume, back and front is rewind and forward.
The best of the device... you can record from analog sources or a microphone with really high quality (professionals use MD), so it will be really easy to convert your old cassettes to data used in the pc, which also can be converted in Wav or MP3 using the correct software (sony provide it) or even burn it in a music CD.
I totally recommend the device, I have my entire music collection in two HIMD's (my collection is of 1200)
