Sorry! I wish I played this sooner!

  • User Rating: Excellent
  • Durability:
Pros:For Children: Playing, getting used to counting, teaching winning/losing gracefully.
Cons:Requires reading, will have to help smaller children play (ages 4 & 5)
The Bottom Line: Very enjoyable game, teaches a little strategy, but mostly helps with game play, counting and in general having fun!

My family is getting into the board games for our nightly passion. My daughter is almost 4 ¾ years old, is truly enjoying all of the board games we can give her. She has a desire to play anything and everything!

We received the Sorry! board game for the holidays from the grandparents and have been playing this virtually every day since!

The Game

This game states it is for 6 year olds to 99 year olds. My daughter is not 6, but she is playing it very well.

The game comes with a game board and I believe 45 cards that have either a number on them or Sorry! listed on them. There are no 6 or 9 cards in the card deck

There are 16 see-through colored pegs: yellow, red, blue and green.

Our box has a nice set of instructions included. These instructions were printed on a light cardboard “table” that helps hold the game pieces and cards in place better than having everything swimming in the box loosely.

There was also an instruction sheet that was completely in Spanish.

The game play is pretty easy. You choose your color peg, put them all into the start section and then draw cards. Your goal is to get all of your pegs out and around the game board once and get into your “safety zone” and then into your “home zone”.

To start, you have to draw a 1 or 2 card to get out of your starting area. If you do not get those on the draw, you have to wait until you draw them in order to begin playing. One alternative to this is if you get the Sorry! card. This card allows you to swap your peg (that is in the starting zone) with someone else’s peg on the board. This puts their peg back to their own starting zone and you take their position. That is terrific especially if you are not getting out of your starting area and others are moving around the board quickly!

The other decent card to draw is the 11 card. This allows you to move 11 spaces, or swap with someone else’s peg. If they are really close to your safety zone and you just started a peg, swap with them and you are set. (But, you might also put them closer to their safe or home zone!)

All of the other cards move you forward or backward on the game board. The 4 card moves you back 4 spaces. This is a terrific card to get if you are just getting out of your start section and you get the 4 backwards, you are perfectly positioned to get into your “safety zone” without having to go completely around the game board. Most of the cards are just draw and moving cards. A couple of them will allow you to choose to move forward the number or backward 1 space.

The 2 card allows you to get a peg out but also it allows you to draw another card from the pile.

Overall Impressions

The game is very fun. I don’t recall playing this when I was younger. When we were shopping for suitable board games, the family including the grandparents, all had a hard time finding games for the 4 – 6 year old age bracket. There were a few out there, but mostly it was for under 3 and 6 and over. We took a few chances with some of the 6 + games, but in a few instances, we struck gold. A couple of the games, our daughter is excited to play, but it is just a little difficult for her.

This game, even though it says 6 + has not been bad. She has a little bit of a hard time with the swap cards thinking through which person to switch pegs with that would put her in a better position. But, we help her with those.

She isn’t effectively reading and the cards to have “instructions” on them like move forward 10 spaces or backwards 1 space. We advise her on what choices she has and she moves accordingly. We offer suggestions, especially when she can swap with others or possibly moving back.

She really enjoys the game. This is helping her understand playing, losing or winning gracefully and thinking through situations. If you have a toddler or pre-school aged child, this really should be a game that you check out.

One drawback to the game, which is not a big thing, is that you go through the cards quickly and have to reshuffle them to keep playing. Games usually seem to last about 20 – 30 minutes with 3 players in our home.

~Thanks for spending time with me today!~
