Pros: Rich, sweet, delightful flavor, low calories.
Cons: Like everything, it could be a little bigger.
Sometimes I buy nutrition/diet/energy bars that I am almost certain will suck. I just get tired of the same ol thing, and I go off in search of somethinganythingthat will be different.
My last foray into bars I wont like found me bringing home a box of bars that was not only different, it was positively strange for me. No chocolate, no nuts, no caramelnothing that would normally appeal to me.
No, no, it wasnt anything totally out thereno frog with cayenne bars. But close.
Even my husband eyed the box of South Beach Cinnamon Raisin High Protein Cereal Bars with a bit of a jaundiced eye. He knows how this goesI grab the bars I wont like, I dont like them, and they wind up being expensive snacks for our son.
Well, maybe thats how it usually goes, but not this time, Zurg.
South Beach Cinnamon Raisin High Protein Cereal Bars were a hit with me almost before I tasted themthe smell! These bars have a rich, sweet, buttery, cinnamon-y smell reminiscent of those Pillsbury bake-at-home cinnamon rolls. One whiff and my poor mouth was watering prodigiously. How could they make a diet food that smelled this good? Arent there laws?
It was with terrific excitement that I took a bite of my first South Beach Cinnamon Raisin High Protein Cereal Bar. Oh, what joy! Oh, what a sweet, crunchy, savory treasure! No kiddingI may sound like Im joking, but Im absolutely serious. This bar has a marvelous textureif youre familiar with the chocolate meal replacement bar from South Beach, its much like that. If not, its a little like a Rice Krispy treat without the guilt, shame, or over-the-top stickiness. The flavor, like the aroma, is definitely similar to the bake-them-yourself cinnamon rolls I used to practically roll around in when I was a kid. Sweet, buttery-tasting, just cinnamon-y enough to complement the flavor without dominating it. The baked raisins, which I often dont like (something about mushy raisins makes me feel woogy), actually work marvelously heretheyre more a hint than a strong flavor.
South Beach Cinnamon Raisin High Protein Cereal Bars arent the biggest bars around, but, at 1.23 oz (35 grams), they arent the smallest, either. Theyre not really big enough to replace a meal (South Beach doesnt recommend them as such), though I have been known to have one bar, an orange or banana, and a big ice water and call that good. At 140 calories, these bars are a terrific taste versus caloric cost deal. Each bar contains 15% of the DV for saturated fat, 12% of the DV for fiber, and 20% for Protein. The sweetness is achieved with a mix of sugars (7 grams) and sugar alcohol (3 grams). With 10-25% of the DV for 10 vitamins and minerals, this bar really is the perfect midday (or morning, or evening) snack.
All in all, South Beach Cinnamon Raisin High Protein Cereal Bars turned out to be a complete hit. Sure, I wish they were a little bigger, but thats just the munch-mouth in me. The texture is pleasing, the flavor heavenly, and, nutritionally speaking, theyre a solid snack for dieters. If youre craving a rich, sweet, totally un-chocolate-y snack that wont put a horrifying dent in your diet, this is definitely the bar for you.
