| kirsib's Full Review: Southern Voice * by Tim McGraw |
Tim McGraw, my favorite subject. And here he is once again, offering music to push the limits with his passion and remarkable way of pulling his audience with him, which ever direction he is going. He starts wit Still, telling us how lucky he still is. I find myself closing my eyes and just dreaming with him.
The journey continues with a Ghost Town Train, almost too simple lyrics and melodies to swing with. My babes goooooooooneeeeeeee.... I like how Tim makes his country sound like soul, or is it soul sounding country? You decide.
I love the story on the Good Girls, sad and solemn and if for nothing else buy this album to enjoy the band behind Tim. Every instrument and note is just the way they should, nothing too loud, nothing out of place, just music to your ears like it should.
First true country tune here is I Didn't Know It At The Time, piano starts it and Tim does not really sound like he usually sounds. He is singing lower and really driving this one home. Another surprise from him.
It's A Business Doing Pleasure With You is a faster tempo twang song. I'm thinking this is one of the tracks he will be singing for a long time. He is all business if pleasuring me is his business, and thankfully it is!
I could have survived without his next song If I Died Today, just seems like that subject has been chewed and spitted out way too many times already. He continues the melancholy singing about woman looking for a Mr Whoever You Are, not the shining moment on this album for Tim. Way too long and boring. Sorry, FF track for sure.
Title track Southern Voice is the song Tim is promoting right now, witty lyrics and simple tune, and shows Tim as a country singer with no ifs or abouts. Solid and good and yes, Southern.
Song about dad not being there continues old fashion country tunes without giving me any extra chills. Well hopefully it gets some dad somewhere to realize, how important it really is to be there.
Funkier Tim returns singing about being Jesus. I don't know what to think of that song so let's just call it funky. I would call Forever Seventeen a Classic Tim McGraw song, it sounds like something he could have been singing forever.
....a little midnight Chardonnay smooth the edges of the day, a little taste of maryjane makes you feel young again....
Tim ends his album with yet another slow storytelling song about life, I'm a little surprised that there is not any true love songs here, and he did not act like much of a playboy at all. Kind of miss him being a bad boy! Maybe the next album..
This is another pro delightful album from Tim, I'm not sure if there is as many top hits as in some of his prior releases but he continues on the path he has chosen, singing soulful and meaningful songs, not trying too hard to please everyone around him.
