| drumturtle's Full Review: Soyajoy Soy Milk Maker |
I read somewhere that Carrageenan, used in most store-bought soymilks as a thickener, is not good, so I decided to try making my own soy milk and purchased the Soyajoy after reading favorable reviews. The unit arrived promptly and was well-packaged direct from the company.
It took some reading to make sure I understood the instructions. The first time I added the soybeans, they got stuck in chute and I had to fight to free them. I tried adding them directly to the mesh container, but then I had trouble fitting them around the blades to re-connect the unit. It makes a HORRIBLE grinding noise that scared the bejeebies out of me and the cats. Then the alarm tells you it's done and won't stop going off until you unplug the thing. The soymilk is healthy, I guess, but not tasty. I have to add flavored syrups and vanilla and cinnamon in order to make it drinkable. It is okay if added to cereals.
Now...cleanup. It is advertised as easy cleanup, but this is definitely not so. I spend probably a good 10-15 minutes scrubbing out the mesh container, and even then, cannot seem to get out all the granules. The special cleaning solution from the Soyajoy company works really well, but this is expensive to order, especially since I don't use the Soyajoy very often. I keep a coffee can full of the cleaner to re-use, but that means having to store this specially-labeled coffee can somewhere where I can find it when I need it.
Now, I got ambitious and ordered the tofu-making kit, also. That was very confusing, as the directions are for someone boiling the soymilk without a Soyajoy, and I had to figure out what step I was actually starting on once the Soyajoy already made the milk. I went through the process of adding the thickener and squeezing it into the block, but out of a whole container of milk, I got a clump of tofu the size of my palm. What a waste! And of course, then there was more clean-up. Definitely not worth the effort.
