| spongebob_man1's Full Review: Spartan Sports Hex Dumbbell 50 Pound |
Quality dumbells for your home gym are provided by Spartan Sports. The construction is flawless and the weight is extremely accurate.
It is helpful to have two of any dumbell you purchase. With only one you are limiting yourself to the number of exercises you can do. It is also nice to have a variety of weight as well. That way you can use lighter weights for exercises like Tricep Kickbacks and the heavier ones for the Bench Press or Squats.
The best, and pretty much only, feature of these dumbells is their hexagonal shape. This virtually eliminates rolling and also gives your wrist/arm more freedom of movement than large round weights. If you've ever had a heavy dumbell roll over your foot or hand, you will appreciate this "cool" safety feature.
Exercises You Can Do:
(assuming 2 dumbells)
Upright Row, Lunge, Bicep Curls, Tricep Kickback, Overhead Push, Side Raises, Hammer Curl, Concentration Curl, Wrist Extension/Flexion, Front Raise, Squats, Calf Raises, Bench Press, Chest Flye, and many more...
Why Buy Dumbells?
There are some distinct benefits in using dumbells. Here are a few of them:
- they incorporate stabalising muscles which help you develop a more balanced physique and posture
- they "fit" your body better, you don't have to fit to a machine
- you can train with the most natural movements
- you get the greatest range of motion
- they are great for circuit training which improves cardiovascular (aerobic) fitness
- you can create much more specific training routines to achieve certain goals (example - sports training)
Are They Safe?
When used correctly, and with a spotter for heavy lifts, you are at a low risk for injury. You may have learned these in PE class in High School or College but just in case, here are some tips to keep in mind when training with dumbells:
- always warm up
- perform each exercise with a light weight to start ("warm up set")
- have a spotter
- avoid dropping weights on floor
Spartan Sports
You can buy these at G.I. Joe's, Big 5, and many other sporting goods stores. I bought my sets on sale at Big 5 and I even found a few at Goodwill (only crazy people just give stuff like this away!). I have 2-15 lbs, 2-25 lbs, 2-40 lbs, 2-50 lbs, and 2-75 lbs, all Spartan Sports. I could plan a total body workout using just these weights. I bought all of these for around $80.00.
Final Say:
These dumbells are well worth your hard earned cash. Try Play It Again Sports to get them cheaper than list price. You will enjoy them. Just remember to use a spotter, it can help you avoid many dangerous situations.
I give the Spartan Sports Hex Dumbell a well deserved A+
Thanks!
