| FlanderFlop's Full Review: Specialized Wedlock |
Now that I have moved into a city and my bicycle is the primary mode of transportation, security has become much more important than when I lived in a small town where everyone knew each other. Over the last year I have been through a number of locks, and I am now a firm believer that the WedLock is the best lock on the market. Until the Wedlock there were really two types of locks on the market. Most people had a cable lock, and those serious about their bikes had a U-lock.
Cable locks are great if you are in an area where someone with a pair of bolt cutters at a bike rack would stick out like a sore thumb. However if your bike was left for a long period of time or in a less visible place cable locks were easy targets.
U-Locks are much more secure, although over the years the talented bike thieves have developed a number of ways to get through them quickly. I personally have broken two of them for friends who lost their keys. For the most part however your bike is safe with a U-lock. The major problem with U-locks is that they are very heavy and bulky. They tend to bang around on the bike no matter what kind of mount you have. The second problem is that you need to find something relatively narrow to lock the bike to so that the U-lock will fit around it.
The WedLock solves all of the problems I had with both of the other two designs. First off, they are rugged enough that no one can cut them with bolt cutters. Also, as they are such a strange design and have not yet permeated the market, the professional bike thieves have not worked out the neat little tricks to get through them as they have done with the U-locks. While there durability is similar to the U-locks the WedLock has the advantage that it fold up neatly into a small rubber pouch that mounts to the frame. Although it does rattle a little it does not bang around and interfere with the pedal motion in the way that the U-locks do. In fact carrying one of these things around is probably more convenient than the cable locks as well.
In short these are the most convenient and durable locks on the market and are well worth the extra cash.
