A delicious granular sediment of the Orient !
Written: Aug 09 '10
Pros:Very cheap. Very tasty. Pungent Cinnamon for lovers of ! Medicinal qualities
Cons:Snap on with holes lid can come off a bit too easy.
The Bottom Line: Delicious to season appetizers, entrees, meats, veggies. Dye, chemical, additive free. 5 spices, thats it. No MSG. No NaCl. Easy Asian flavor enhancer !
I have found that starting a new career means having to become exceptionally creative with the staple foods I allow myself by blood type and other self-guiding principles, to consume. The Spice Supreme line of genuine all natural seasonings is great for the poultry, fish and pasta, rice or vegetables my mother and I make our lunches from.
Since I am currently laid off until the next campaign begins, and mother is still employed, I have time to indulge in food recipes 101 and of course just enjoy myself. The pantry has most of the items the two people who leave the house and go to a job, can take in a plastic baggie or knapsack.
The freezer is semi-full of the chicken tenders and breast pieces, either skin-free or breaded. There is also a nice variety of fish such as salmon fillets, perch pieces and cod sometimes but not today. Sometimes but again not today, there is pork chops or hamburgers.
The refrigerator is full of vegetables like cucumbers, lettuce, onions, garlic, tomatoes and of course condiments most fridges have in em . . . Mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, sour cream, butter, the dairy fluids, but the spice rack across from the fridge is really helpful.
To make a simple piece of meat come to life under the Asian influence of spices ground together is flavorful and no guessing with this: its in here all five genuine herbs and spice.
So read on, hurry to the grocery store for that fresh meat whether its pork, chicken or fish and go ahead sprinkle generously !
|| ALLERGY NOTE ||
Okay with nothing in here but the ground spice itself, that means MSG-less and chemical-free, I can safely say just be careful if you experience ANY allergic reactions because of the anise or cloves in here . . . If you are not sure go see an otolaryngologist and request an allergy panel to be done finding out what you can and cannot tolerate.
|| ABSORPTION/ ASSIMILATION ||
Oriental Five Spice is finely ground and dissolves very rapidly in hot to tepid food; therefore I am to understand that these spices fuse effectively between mucous membranes and thin tissue walls of digestive tract to do their thing. Now you may or may not know that four of the five spices have genuine medicinal properties and can be used to alleviate a number of symptoms.
For example, Cinnamon lowers the low-density cholesterol levels in ones blood while Anise delivers comfort to the digestive complication known as flatulence (gas). Both of the herbs are in here and offer a health benefit as well as taste improvement to any staple game or poultry or fish, the milder ones though.
|| APPEARANCE ||
It is granular but very fine-powdered. Soft not coarse when sifted through the fingers and rubbed between forefinger and thumb. It is a deep reddish-yellowish brownish mixture that sifts effervescently. I love the texture and use it often to enhance an ‘island’ flavor.
In the case of 48, these are arranged in rows eight deep and six across or 12 across and four deep. The entire case is covered with a plastic-wrap that comes off in one sheet. These keep well in a cool dry place such as a pantry and need not be moved from the box to shelf if sitting up from the floor. Each cannister is also individually wrapped depending on what store you purchase from. The dollar store cases sometimes are not but each cannister is sealed. If not, return the ones that were opened upon you opening the case.
|| COST ||
As many of the Spice Supreme seasonings or single flavor products go, these are sold relatively cheap and I mean cheap. How does less than a dollar grab you at even the grocery store not just the $1 stores across America. This bottle of 3 ½ ounces of fine ground powder goes a very long way and its contents are very common and in abundance all over the planet, so naturally it should be convenient for everyone to afford. And so it is at $0.99 I bought two and a bunch of other flavors essential to making my lunch experiences more exotic !
|| DESIGN ||
A cylindrical cannister that is all translucent plastic not recyclable houses the Spice Supreme Oriental Five Spices. The counter-clockwise twist off cap is a lighter shade of burnt sienna to compliment the shade inside. A darker label with the ingredients and company who packs this stuff, Gel Spice Company Inc operating out of Bayonne NJ by the way, wraps itself around the entire bottle leaving bottom and top un-labeled. It fits well in hand, wet or towel-dried for use in your favorite vegetable of meat.
|| DIRECTIONS ||
This one is according to taste of the individual, strictly the experience one is after upon experimenting with particular foods and finding certain spices bring out the best or worst in something. Being high on the cinnamon list as it is first and most profound odiferously, one might think everything will result in a sweet-sauciness.
Not the case here when garlic or bamboo shoots or even baby corn are added, this stuff with a high dissolve-rate, will equally pick up the natural taste and odor of what it is being cooked on or in. So don’t be worried about over-powering cinnamon !
|| DOSAGE ||
Not applicable here UNLESS you are cooking this in a teaspoon of baking soda to use on an abcess, or drink in a hot tea minus the baking soda for sore throat help, or just adding it to your bath water for an indulgence and skin softening experience calgon only measures ½ up to !
|| ELIMINATION ||
It darkens the urine when eaten in large amounts for many weeks at a time because of the anise seed and ginger root. However, it is not dangerous dyeing of your internal organs because of what is not used does leave and what stays changes color anyway and serves now as a medicinal protectant against any harmful cholesterol-building foods you eat in addition to this.
|| HISTORY ||
This company, Gel Spice, has its own tractor trailers that ensure delivery of the finest inventory on time. Its fleet is operated by caring individuals who value good food and products to make those dishes taste even better. As the connoisseur of quality herbs and spices and blends of such, Gel Spice products, have been traveling through generations of digestive tracts and gaining superior ground.
In five decades this family-owned and operated business has filled pantry after pantry with quality baking and cooking essentials. To be able to buy these products very cheap is a great thing in this economy when everything is so darned expensive. But it is understandable that some spice companies only want to serve the best at the lowest rate possible even if they do travel the high seas and scorching deserts to find just the proper ingredients for your palate to enjoy !
|| INGREDIENTS ||
I was thrilled to read only spices, nothing else. 1) Cinnamon 2) Anise 3) Ginger 4) Nutmeg 5) Cloves
|| NUTRITION FACTS ||
None that are listed on the bottle does not eliminate the fact that these delicious spices are good for you no matter how much you ingest per week. I say that because ‘nothing in excess’ is one of the rules I have always been reminded not to break even if the outcome can be nothing but beneficial; however ginger for a woman of certain child-bearing age should consult her doctor on the production of estrogen or other hormone, if eating too much of this might cause problems.
|| QUESTIONS ||
Just a simple company name and city and state. No number. A website but that is primarily for ordering the products and maybe not customer support, although I did not peruse it.
|| SMELL ||
Since beginning writing this review over 40 minutes ago already, the cylindrical canister is opened on my desk and the rich pungent smell of the two top ingredients are firmly filling the air. Anise is the black licorice smell and not over-powering but definitely there as soon as it is opened and the cinnamon fades slowly. You would expect a heavy permeation from the cloves, but surprisingly, this ingredient, last on list, is quite subtle. Well to my nose anyway . . .
|| TASTE ||
Sweet, bitter, a bit like wood but highly acceptable to the many Asian fares out there that just melt in your mouth because the island experience is that rewarding. The ginger and cinnamon together are very sweet and very pleasant and even if I am not a fan of licorice nor cloves because I detest smoked ham in molasses and clove seasoning, this did not stand to be shaken off but rather shaken on generously to pork, chicken, beef and fish !
|| USES ||
See the directions but if you must know this product, Spice Supreme Oriental Five Spices, can be used on a number of different appetizers, entrees, casseroles, sautes, stir-frys, etc.
|| WARNING ||
Not applicable as nothing bad might happen if you consume too much; however the cap has a nice snap-on plastic translucent lid with holes in it. I encourage and strongly suggest to making sure that is securely fastened on top cause over-pouring is messy and creates much tension in a crowded kitchen full of hungry people !
|| FINAL NOTE ||
So, if you need assistance in creative cooking 101, look to Spice Supreme and for your more exotic Asian fare, try this particular blend. It is sure to please the fussiest eater because there are five spices in here that make Americanized Chinese, Cantonese, Szchechuan, Tai and Polynesian food even better and perhaps, a bit more authentic. Thank you for reading and
Enjoy !
