doorstopman's Full Review: SpiderMan for PlayStation 2
Recently in the gaming industry, companies have been making video games based on movies. And they have been successful with it. That was not the case with Spiderman. After the amazing movie came out, I decided to buy the game. Right away I found that the game was lacking many things; for one, fighting. In each level (in my opinion) there is far too little bad guys to fight. I definitely do NOT recommend this game for anyone. There are some good features too though, but not enough for it to be anything worth buying.
PLOT
The plot is EXACTLY the same as the movie plot. It is sort of like the makers of the game watched the movie and transferred everything that they saw into the game. There was one change though, the addition of different bosses. Except for that, it was pretty much the same exact thing. There are no bridges between the levels either. The levels proceed as this: Spiderman enters a building and completes a mission. Then a few seconds later he is already a mile downtown in a complete different building. And then another few seconds later he is miles away in the OSCORP building. If you have already seen the movie, there is no point to expect anything different in the game.
GAMEPLAY
The gameplay in this game is weak. It is pretty much just the same as the PS1 version. In the game, you do everything that Spiderman does in the movie. You can run, jump, climb on the walls and ceilings, shoot your web, fight, and hang down from things. You can also swing on your web. When you are doing it outside up in the air, it is quite strange. If you were too look down while you were swinging, all of the rooftops would be there. So what are you swinging on?!?! This is one of the aspects of the game that just plainly doesnt make sense! While you are going through the levels, you can pick up little golden icons. They teach you new moves and abilities. The only thing that I really enjoyed about the game was the OSCORP level. While playing these missions, you have to be extra careful not to get caught by security, or the motion sensors. If you DO happen to get caught, just run! Run to the beginning of the level and hide in the dark. Once you are in a shadow or a dark corner, look at the face at the bottom left of the screen. The face changes color. That shows that you are in stealth. As long as you are in stealth no matter how close the guards are, they wont be able to see you. So back onto What if you get caught. If they find you and the alarm goes off, Giant robots will come and shoot at you.
GRAPHICS AND SOUND
The graphics and sound of the game are pretty good. The graphics are nice and sharp and elaborate. The movie scenes in between some of the levels were well made and looked pretty realistic even though they were computer generated. The sound is really great. They take the music composed for the movie and put it in the game so it seems like you are playing the movie instead of the game.
OVERALL
My overall feeling about this game is that it is lacking many things; for one, realism. The game is very non-believable. A thing that I was very annoyed about was the ending of the game. After you defeat the Green Goblin, it shows a 30 second clip of the Green Goblin dying on the bridge and thats it. Also the game was too short for my liking. I finished it in one night. My advice to everyone: DONT BUY THIS GAME!!!!!!!! It is not worth your money or time.
