vinyalwhl's Full Review: SpiderMan for PlayStation 2
Intro
Well, to be honest, I didnt see the movie. So, I can't really say how it differs or if the story is better, but I don't think that matters too much. I was a little skeptical when I first bought this game, because I thought it was something they just threw together, after the movie gained popularity. The only reason I got it, was because I played the spider-man game for the old playstation and loved it. Luckily, I was very wrong. This game includes a wide variety of villians and a story line, that seems well thought out.
Gameplay (10/10)
I was glad to see that the controls in this game are fairly simple. It only took me a couple minutes in the training mode to figure them out. The targeting ability comes in handy throughout this game because it locks onto the enemies and makes them easier to hit. There is a lot of web abilities that you can use in this game like web gloves, shield, zip-line and impact webbing (a big ball of web). There is also some new in-air combat moves that weren't in the previous game. For example, you can kick or punch in the air and use your webbing. There are also some nice combos in the game that you can learn. That fact that the webs don't hit anything does not bother me at all. One thing that bothered me was the enemy finder. It doesn't exactly work too well and sometimes it can take awhile until you figure out where your enemies are. There are also some things that you can't stick to and that causes many, many problems.
Graphics (8/10)
The graphic in this game are a lot better than I expected. I heard that the graphic on Gamecube and Xbox were better but these were good enough for me. The green goblin looked awesome and so did NYC. The game moves at 60 frames per second and that causes some problems. At times, the game slows down a lot and I think thats the reason. The camera angles in this game are just bad. When I first started playing, I didn't notice it. Eventually, the walls started blocking my view at inconvenient times and it got annoying.
Story (10/10)
Like I said before, I didn't see the movie so I dont know if the screwed up the plot or if the plot were even similiar. What I do know is that this games plot is simply and, therefore, good (because I hate complicated games). The basics are this, you get by radioactive spider then get super powers. Then, your uncle ben gets killed and you seek revenge. Thats all I'm gonna say though because I don't wanna ruin it.
Sound (8/10)
The background music in this game isn't anything special. I prefer actual music, like in Tony Hawk Pro Skater. They actually got the actors who played spiderman and the green goblin to do the voices and I thought that was pretty cool. Although, the dialogue is terrible, but TVs have volume controls, so it's all good.
Difficulty (9/10)
The game has 3 levels of difficulty to play at and I chose the medium one. Overall, I wasn't too hard. I had some trouble with the stealth levels because I'm not good at that and the enemies with guns get frustrating because sometimes 9 guys are shooting at you. The villians in this game were pretty easy, the vulture was almost pathetic.
Re-Playability (9/10)
There are plenty of cheats spread throughout this game (characters mostly) that make it fun to play. There is also a bowling mini game thats really fun and with 20+ combos the fighting never gets old. The bonus training levels are also fun, and playing as Mary Jane.
Overall (5.4/6)
Thats a great score. So, at least rent it if your not going to buy it. Believe me, it is worth it.
