At first I felt a smidgen of sympathy for the participants in the film Spiker until I realized these people voluntarily chose to make this film so they deserve all the razzies there are available. It was written by Richard Preston, Jr., directed by Frank Zagarino, who also took on the role of the serial killer known as Spiker. He never speaks in the film and I can only access that to he is a man that doesn’t have a speaking voice that matches his ‘look’ - kinda like Jim Nabors singing. The carpet just doesn’t match the drapes.
Feel free to stop me if you have heard this story before … Six horny teens [dressed in their football/cheerleading garb] go to spend the night in a ‘haunted house’ on the outskirts of town. As it turns out, one of the gals is to inherit the home from her deceased aunt Elizabeth. As we also discover, she was born on the same day the aunt died and, why heavens, is an exact ringer for her. Color me surprised.
One of the other gals is the mayor’s daughter and niece of one of the policemen. The third gal, while I’m breaking them down, is into the occult and witchcraft - séances and so forth. Her intention is to call up the spirit of the dead Elizabeth, just so her niece can have a chat with her. The guys, all horndogs with nothing more on their minds but drinking and a roll in the proverbial hay.
But … to quote the infomercials … that’s not all …
Early in the morning of the same day, serial killer Adam Brandis, affectionately known as The Spiker, is being transferred from his perfectly safe confinement of the past 20 years to a mental institution. Why, after 20 years, they decide he is insane, don’t know. From the description of his prior crimes, it should have been a given at the trial. But, then again, where would our story be?
First he is traveling via sheriff vehicle to a barge at the lake which will transport him to the mental hospital. Now you know and I know, ain’t gonna happen. Dude is gonna get away, that’s a given from the moment they mention he is being transferred. Unless they are being transferred with a toe tag already in place, chances are the bad guys are gonna get away in the movies.
As the plot thickens, along with the glaze on my eyes, Spiker and Elizabeth have a past. Seems the miss was deeply in love with him and he returned the favor. Until Clive, his best friend, enters the picture and, somehow, impregnates Elizabeth and she is forced to cast Spiker aside and marry Clive. And that is the last time Spiker spoke in his life and when his killing spree began, culminating in over 25 murders, that they had discovered by the time he was sentenced twenty years ago. Hell, the town ain’t that dang big, 25 people would have made one hell of a dent in the town. Anyway …
Now he is back to avenge himself and these unlucky teens are in his path. I gets fairly bloody from this point on. I will give him a big A for ingenious in his murder techniques. I do have one itty-bitty comment however. He’s like, oh, 6+ feet tall with a shock of pure white flowing hair. He’s walking around town wearing a billowing long coat, like the cowboys used to wear. Everyone is looking for him because he managed to escape. Why the frig did no one notice this massive stranger? Whatever.
The best acting in the movie? The ghost.
Carries an R rating for violence, gore, sexuality, and language. All participants were horrible except I kinda grew a warm spot for Spiker. He is quite deft with those railroad spikes. Overall, not a keeper.
