There are few facts known about this band. But what I have determined is that A: They hail from Ontario, Canada. B: They are 4 high school chicks. C: They will be on this summer's Ozzfest tour D: They are seriously ticked off.
Before I start this review, I'd like to take a moment to say how really lame typing LiKe THiS iS. YeA I KNoW aLL tHe K00l NeT PEOplE dO IT, but I think it's juvenile and more than a little annoying. And the track listing on the back of the CD is done up this way, and it annoyed me so I figured I'd mention it. Back to the review...
From reading some stuff from their website, and from listening to and trying to decipher the lyrics of their debut album "Spit" (Released in late 1999) these girls have a serious angst problem. They assume men are scum, and all other females on the world hate them because they're different.
And yes, somehow they think this is some sort of new thing. But as Rage Against the Machine and Korn have shown us, there is only so much angst that people can handle before it gets old. And while this album does rock out in places, some of the song subjects get slightly repetitive.
Yes, I think they rock out. A couple of the songs on this release seriously kick, most notably is probably "Brackish", but the title track "Spit", "Suck", and "Do You Think I'm a Whore" are all pretty good as well. The main problem with the last three I mentioned is that the subject matter tends to be pretty much the same in the songs, and it is repeated again in other songs that I haven't mentioned.
Other songs just seemed too simplistic, like "Paper Doll", "Jonny" and "Choke". Ok, we get it, you don't want to be looked at like less than other people, or treated poorly. You and everyone else. Then there's songs like "Raven" which don't really say a whole lot, but are filled with curses and the same line repeated about 40 times. If that's not angst, I don't know what is.
However, the band does show some versatility by slowing down a bit on the sludgy Tool-like track "Get Off (You can eat a d+ck)"... Which while the subject matter isn't a whole lot different, it does show off some of the band's musical skills, same goes for the CD ending instrumental, "Immortal".
So, the best three songs on the release are "Spit", "Brackish" and "Do you think I'm a whore", and while the lyrics don't impress me, "Choke" is a pretty powerful tune as well. Most of the other songs are watered versions of these 4 songs.
As harsh as I am being, you have to remember, these are 4 teen age girls, playing hardcore metal in a male dominated industry. Other teen age musicians are going the Britney Spears route, while these girls are trying very hard to avoid it - But as often is the case, the harder you try to not be something, the closer you actually become to it, which appears to be the pitfall these ladies have come to.
Musically, they pack a huge talent. All the playing is solid, and the singing stands up on its own. They've even shown some decent songwriting ability, and I think once they mature some, these girls could be a force to be reckoned with. While not as popular as Hole, or refined as Drain STH, I think these girls have more talent and power than both those bands, and once they can step out of the angst trap, I think they'll do much better. I'm looking forward to seeing them on the upcoming Ozzfest. Metal fans, check this release out, especially hardcore metal fans looking for something a little different. So the lyrics may not move you, but the power of their sound will. Hopefully, the rest will come in time. I would give the album a 3.5, but it's not quite a 4, so it's a 3 with a thumbs up. But it's a really high 3. ;)
