I bought this album solely as a gamble. The description thingy in the store said that Kittie was an all girl punk band with a sound to make the Sex Pistols proud. I never really liked The Sex Pistols, but hold them in a kind of musical awe, so I bought the album. It also helped that the bassist is incredibly cute. ;) I really like this album. The guitarist can pull off riffs with skill matched only by Creed's guitarist, Mark Tremonti (although hes not nearly so impressive live, but thats beside the point.) The bassist is also skilled (I assume; I dont know too much about the bass.) and her backing vocals are good enough that I think she could lead a few songs. The drummer, keeps the beat well, can play fast, and gets very flashy in some songs. The lead singer has an absolutely beautiful voice, when she isnt screaming in what sounds like a mix of rage and constipation. (Although that's fun, too.)
Most of the songs are very good, and as such, standouts are few, but are not needed. The tracks that really stuck in my head were Brackish (goes fast to slow and back in a heartbeat, and shows off the girls' fabulous musical range.) Spit (lots of yelling), and Paperdoll (just fun.) The songs are good to listen to at any time, and can suit any mood, from pleasantly happy, to so angry that Limp Bizkit's Break Stuff sounds like its being sung by a guy with fantastic self control.
Spit is a wonderful album, by a terrific and versatile band, and I eagerly await a follow-up.
