Surely you’ve heard the term “50 cent cigar” at some point in your life. But did you know that you can actually get one for .50 cents? Sure, it’s not a mind-blowing, fancy cigar, but it’s a .50-cent cigar nonetheless. I’m talking, of course, about Splitarillos’ cigarillos cigars, in this case, their Swagberry cigarillo, which I purchase individually from my local convenience store guy here in Manitou Springs, for just .50 cents apiece, and that includes tax. And for such a cheap smoke, it ain’t half bad.

Splitarillos Swagberry cigarillos are 4 7/8” in length with a 28 gauge. That’s basically about the size of an average middle finger, except maybe a bit skinnier, with a brown wrapper. They are made by Trendsettah USA in Commerce, California. They are available in boxes of 60 and 25, ($17.99 and $9.99 respectively, based upon Internet research.) However, I’ve found that the places I’ve seen them (my convenience store, and Smoker City) tend to sell them individually, which makes them very affordable. They are wrapped in an easy-to-open foil wrapper. In addition to Swagberry, Splitarillos come in O.G. Sweet, G6 Grape, and Rozay Wine flavors.
These things are very similar in appearance to their Swisher Sweets Strawberry Cigarillos counterparts; if you didn’t know any better, you’d think you were holding a Swisher in your fingers. There is a difference, however. Whereas the Swisher’s smell like strawberry jam, the Swagberry’s smell more like strawberry milk (my girlfriend thinks they smell like this strawberry oatmeal we get, so use that comparison if you prefer.) The result is a pleasant scent that you’ll want to savor for a minute or so before you light up.
And light up you will—you don’t buy a cigar just to smell it, not even a .50-cent cigar. These things light up easily enough: a quick flick of your Bic or other cheapo lighter, a couple of puffs, and voila! you’re smoking. These burn evenly and produce a nice, long ash.
It’s while smoking that the comparison to Swisher’s strawberries is most apt. When you pop it into your mouth, you’ll get a faint strawberry flavor that continues as you smoke. The Swagberry is classified as a mild cigar, and these are about as smooth as the Swisher’s are. They essentially smoke about the same as a Swisher and pack just as mean a buzz as you inhale (and yes, I know that you aren’t supposed to inhale cigars, but I do.) It’s actually quite a pleasant smoking experience, one that lasts between 10 and 15 minutes.
Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t remind you that cigars are not a safe alternative to cigarettes. They increase your risk of lung cancer, throat cancer, mouth cancer, cancer of the esophagus, cancer of this, that, and the other, as well as heart disease. You already knew the risks when you started smoking, but still, there they are.
Splitarillos bill themselves as the latest hip, trendy smoking experience, so you can enjoy a brief amount of fashionable street cred simply by lighting up. They are insanely cheap, they are mild, and they taste and smell good. What they aren’t is a serious cigar—you aren’t going to find them inside the humidor at your local cigar shop or tobacco merchant. Where you will find them is behind the counter at smoker-oriented merchants, gas stations, and convenience stores—places that you’re apt to purchase on the spur of the moment. So if you’re in the mood for a cheap, flavored cigar, particularly a strawberry-flavored one, look no further than Splitarillos Swagberry. Think of it as a guilty pleasure, and enjoy.
