Cons: some usage issues with data
I have been with Sprint since August of 1999 when I got my first cell phone. Initially we had an account through my husband's company and got some sort of discount. Over the years I have had my moments with Sprint but over the past few years things have improved substantially. Mainly I have noticed the improvement in customer service. Previously when we lived in Columbus OH I had some major problems with sprint customer service and billing issues. About 3 years ago we moved to the Chicago area, and we have been pleased with the service.
Recent Sprint Purchase of new phones and Plan
Recently I decided it was time to upgrade my old 4 yr old phone. I was kinda sad to give up not having a contract but it was time to upgrade to the new Apple iphone 4s. We have three phones on our family account. One for my son, one for my daughter, and the third one is for me. My husband has a phone through his employer, so he does not need one on our plan. By keeping the family plan my grown children and I all save money. To get an individual plan would cost around $90 and we can get an all inclusive plan for three of us for $180, so for the most part, one phone is free.
My previous plan was about $140 for three phones but only one of them was a smart phone and our new plan includes two of the iphone 4s and one of the regular iphones. We were iphone 4s for $199 each, and the regular iphone for $99. For that price I had to sign a two year contract.

The Transaction with Sprint, and activating phones
I decided to order our phones online which turned out to be really easy and no nonsense. I just picked out the phone and then selected the plan I wanted since I had to change plans. I ended up having to order the phones in three separate orders because I was having them all shipped to separate address' I used a credit card to pay for the phones and got confirmation by email.
I ordered the phones on a Friday and two of us had our new phones by Monday and the other on Tuesday. Activation couldn't have been easier. With my phone I was keeping the same number so when my phone arrived there was instructions to swap out the phone. I was able to go online and enter a few numbers and was using my new phone in minutes. My son had the same experience as I did with his activation.
My daughter wanted to port her number from Verizon and that turned out to not be difficult either. I was nervous that it would be tough for her to do and that she might be without a phone for awhile until they made the switch. As it turned out she called a number on the paper and the guy had her number ported within 10 minutes. Then we went online and activated it just like I had activated mine. It did take a few more minutes than mine but still did not take more than 20 minutes total. We are all over the moon about our new phones.
Sprint Cell Phones -The plan / Price
The new plan that I signed up for is all inclusive which I really like. Even though it is a little more than what we were paying, it is nice to just have one price for everything. The family plan starts at $129 for two lines. Each additional line is $19.99 and phones like the iphone require an additional $10 each for upgraded data. The plan includes 1500 any time minutes, which as it turns out will be more than enough. The other new thing that is included with this new plan, is unlimited calling to any other cell phone, no matter who the carrier is. Also free nights and weekends. The data is unlimited also...so no worrying that you are going to get a giant bill for usage. Text messages are also included. Essentially the price includes anything you can do with the phone besides apps you might purchase.
They do offer other calling plans for more money, that include more minutes or unlimited minutes. Also individual plans. We are pretty happy that we will each only have to pay $60 plus tax of course compared to $90 each plus tax, so it is quite a savings for each of us. The account is in my name so of course I am responsible, but lucky for me, my kids are trustworthy and responsible adults.
I have not really had any issues with service until we got our new phones. The calls are going through great, but because the iphone is a new phone for sprint, they are having to tweak things a bit to get the data working faster. Right now we are getting very weak data service on the network. For me it is not a big deal because I use my wifi network at home so I do not even notice. My son's wife is using the one he is paying for, and she said she has not noticed any problems, but I do not think she uses the internet much at all. My daughter noticed problems with the network mostly and so she called and spoke to someone at Sprint. I also called and we are confident that it will get resolved. It seems better already.
Sprint Customer Service
I had to make a few calls to get information before purchasing my phones and we had no problems. I was able to get through in a hurry and got all my questions answered, and answered correctly.
When we had problems with the data my daughter and I both called and Sprint admitted they were having issues with the Apple phones, and that they were working with Apple to make improvements. We were asked for info about our phones and told that we would get a call back by a tech person. As promised the next day I got a call from a tech at Sprint. He was very polite and asked me to do some things on my phone and report what I saw on my phone. He explained that this was not to fix the phone but to gather information so that they can fix the network and eliminate the slow data issue with the iphones. I feel relatively confident that the issue will be resolved.
The Website Billing, and our Account
I pay my bill automatically each month and have opted out of getting paper statements. I can go to the website any time that I want and look at my bill, get info about my phone, or view usage for any of the phones. There are a lot of other things I can do too, such as make changes to restrictions for any of the phones or chat with customer service if I have a question. They also have an online community if I want to chat with other phone / sprint users.
