Squeeze the Bulb and Squirt Squirts! Oh no! Don’t do as the title says. This clown is not made for children or daring adults. This Squirt is a collectible doll. His flower apparatus is imitation and he is not a toy for children to use as a squirt toy.
Squirt the clown made his debut in 2008, all ten inches of him. He came with a hefty price tag of $29. But Squirt is a collectible doll and to find him and hold him, then own him, for a collector of Annalee Dolls, that is an honor.
Squirt is another whimsical character in the Annalee collection. He’s made in New Hampshire by experienced employees at the Annalee Doll Factory. All Annalee dolls have wire frames in their bodies thus making it quite easy to pose them any which way you would like them to be.
I do not own Squirt but I do visit with him at a friend’s house. I have his brother, Toots, which I recently wrote about in another review. Unlike Toots, Squirt has an unusual irrestible smile on his white painted framed lips. The white coloring framing his lips looks like chalk like the old fashioned clowns of yesteryear.
Squirt wears a green and white checkered shirt with three patches on his purple pants held up by gold and red suspenders. He proudly displays his big yellow tie and black hat with a white daisy on it. Underneath that big hat is a mop of red hair that surrounds his face from side to side. Squirt has big red shoes, clown shoes. He holds a flower attached to a clear plastic hose and at the end is a plastic bulb. Yes, Squirt has tricks up his sleeve. He’s ready to squeeze that plastic bulb and watch out if he does! But don't you do it or it will not work.
My friend who owns Squirt wanted to be creative so she attached a set of tiny plastic colored balloons on Squirt’s suspenders held by entwining the wire that holds the balloons together onto Squirt’s suspenders. She wired the balloons around them so this Squirt looks like he’s pretty full of tricks. Actually it looks like he’s going to go up and away in hot air balloons.
Each Annalee doll has different facial expressions that are colored by hand at the Annalee Doll Factory so no two Squirts are alike. When I choose an Annalee doll I always study the face. It’s all about the face in my opinion.
The Squirt I know has a big wide open smile and like his brother, Toots, Squirt is very whimsical. Unlike Toots though, Squirt is a genuine trickster. He shows it in the squirting flowers he holds. He’s a cunning little guy, yes all ten inches of him.
Squirt comes standing on a yellow felt stand which is held together by a wire that goes through his body, just one wire attached to the stand holding the doll’s body in place. The Annalee card stock tag is attached to this frame. I always leave the tags on because these are such collectibles. He also comes, as all Annalee dolls do, with a red and white tush tag with the Annalee signature on it.
His legs and feet are free so you can pose them any which way you would like. His hands would be free if he wasn’t holding a trick in them. His head can be posed to be looking straight ahead, sideways or up. He is one unique fella if you ask me!
Annalee Thorndike, creator of Annalee Dolls, began making her dolls by hand in a farmhouse in New Hampshire in the early 1950’s. She expanded her business to the public after making display dolls for big stores in the Boston area, all hand painted and still that way today. She was awarded The Collectibles Gift Industry Pioneer Award in 1997. Annalee passed away in the year 2002 but her business goes on and her dolls will surely always be a hit to her fans and future fans.
