Introduction
From the time I hit puberty (and I was an early bloomer) until I was in my early 20s I suffered from severe acne. I know most teens have acne but mine was a genetic problem—my father and oldest sister (40ish) still suffer from moderate acne.
While I outgrew the bulk of my acne around the age of 20-21, I still—at age 26—have an occasional blemish. Then again, who doesn’t?
With a skin tone that’s prone to oiliness, I decided that it might behoove me to head off any breakouts with an acne-reducing cleanser. When I happened across St. Ives Purifying Clear Pore Cleanser on the shelves of my local $1 Store I grabbed it up.
The Product
Packaging
St. Ives Purifying Clear Pore Cleanser comes in an attractive mint green bottle (mine is a 12 fl. oz. container).
Fixed atop the bottle is the most ingenious invention known to cleansers—a pump top. Yes, I know that many products have a pump top, but I still appreciate this quality and find it worthy of mention here.
Appearance
To me, the Clear Pore Cleanser looks a lot like liquid hand soap. It is very thin in consistency, with almost no color to it at all. There does appear to be a slight green tint, but that coloring is barely perceptible.
Scent
Unlike many products used in the treatment of acne, St. Ives Purifying Clear Pore Cleanser does not have a strong medicinal smell. Actually, the scent of the Clear Pore Cleanser is rather light and pleasant.
Foaming?
I am a big fan of foaming facial cleaners, which is the one area in which this product disappoints me. I find that it has very little lather when applied/used, and I really do like my lather.
Miscellaneous Info
St. Ives Purifying Clear Pore Cleanser rinses away cleanly leaving no residue on my face.
Clear Pore Cleanser is 100% soap-free, and that is very good news for my face. Soaps tend to be overly drying even to those like me with oily skin.
St. Ives does not test its products on animals.
Ingredients
There are many people with sensitivities to certain ingredients, so for that reason I will include the ingredient list (from the back of the bottle):
Deionized Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Decyl Glucoside, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG-120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate, Salicylic Acid, Glycerin, Primrose Extract, Sunflower Extract, Sambucus Nigra Extract, Matricaria Extract, Tea Tree Extract, Lavandin Extract, Eucalyptus Globulus Oil, Lemon Oil, Thyme Oil, Chamomile Oil, Bergamot Oil, Tangerine Extract, Polyquaternium-7, Isotearamidopropyl Morpholine Lactate, Sodium Hydroxide, Disodium EDTA, DMDM Hydantoin, Propylene Glycol, Fragrance, FD&C Yellow No. 5, FD&C Blue NO. 1
Effectiveness
I have found St. Ives Purifying Clear Pore Cleanser to be quite effective in controlling acne breakouts.
I still have an occasional pimple, but no major breakouts or even very many of those occasional pimples.
I didn’t realize how effective Clear Pore Cleanser was until I switched to a different cleanser. I’m one of those “grass is always greener” shoppers with little brand loyalty. After about two weeks of using the other cleanser I realized that I had more pimples than usual. When I restarted the St. Ives cleanser my skin cleared up again within a very short period of time.
Cost
While I paid only $1 for St. Ives Purifying Clear Pore Cleanser, it is available at most mass merchandise stores for about $3.50.
Recommendation
This product is quite effective, and it carries a low price tag. With these two traits, how could I do anything other than recommend it highly?
