The Bottom Line: This cleanser is very harsh and leaves skin rather dry and itchy. Although it is quite inexpensive, I would not recommend it.

| chilliebrady's Full Review: St. Ives Purifying Clear Pore Cleanser |
I have a tendency to spend mucho dinero $ on facial cleansers. Whenever I can afford it, I go to a day spa near my house and buy ridiculously expensive products at the advice of an aesthetician. Luckily, I have decent enough skin, but I am always trying to improve it. In particular, during the humid, summer months, my T-Zone has a tendency to become a bit oily. I have been using this great lemon verbana cleansing cream, which sets me back about $28.00 a pop!
Immediately following a recent chat with my hubby regarding unnecessary expenses, I decided it was time to try something new and a little less costly. After just over one month of marital bliss, I am learning the fine art of compromise. Ladies, a bit of advice. When your husband asks, "Why do you spend $28.00 on soap? There is no good answer. Run. Hide. Or....just lie. Whatever you do, do not try St Ives Clear Pore Cleanser.
It starts out okay
I have had past success with St Ives products. I like their Apricot Scrub quite a bit, and figured I would have similar luck with the Clear Pore Cleanser. The product sounds great:
It is 100% Soap Free
It rinses away without greasy residue
It promises to deep clean your pores (i.e. hopefully you won't get as many blackheads/clogged pores)
It is not tested on animals
It contains "tea tree extract"
Sounds good.
.....Too bad it turned me into a dry, itchy mess!
How To...
St Ives Clear Pore Cleanser is quite easy to use. It comes with a pump top that works quite well in the shower. The directions suggest that you should, "massage foaming wash into skin with a light, circular motion, creating a gentle lather." Good luck getting this stuff to lather! I pumped a reasonable amount of the cleanser into my palm and was awarded with only a tiny amount of lather. Incidentally, I did not find this lather to be at all gentle. This stuff stings if it gets anywhere near your eyes.
St Ives Clear Pore Cleanser does, in fact, rinse off quite easily. There is absolutely no greasy residue. In fact, it leaves my face feeling rather "tight," comparable to washing my face with regular soap. The "tight" (itchy!) feeling lasts hours after using this product. In a word, this stuff is harsh. I cannot imagine using this twice a day!
One positive I will mention is that, after using this product, my skin is definitely clean. My nose, in particular, has very few blackheads or clogged pores. Unfortunately, my skin is also dry, itchy, and irritated.
What's in it?
I have no idea what "tea tree extract" is or why it is so great for my face. In addition this odd tea ingredient, St Ives Clear Pore Cleanser contains the following:
deionized water, sodium laureth sulfate, decyl glucoside, cocamidopropyl betaine, peg-20 methyl glucose dioleate, salicylic acid, glycerin, primula veris (primrose) extract, sunflower (helianthus annuus) extract, sambucus nigra extract, matricaria (chamomila recutita) extract, lavandin extract, eucalyptus globulus oil, lemon oil, thyme oil, chamomile oil, bergamot oil, tangerine extract, polyquaternium-7, isostearamidopropyl morpholine lactate, sodium hydroxide, disodium edta, dmdm hydantoin, propylene glymocol, fragrance, fd&c yellow no. 5, fd&c blue no. 1
Sounds like a science experiment to me.
The Fragrance and the Cost
In fairness, I love the fragrance of this product. It has a light, clean, and very pleasant scent. The ingredients contain quite a few yummy smelling extracts and fruit oils, quite pleasing to the senses.
Another positive about St Ives Clear Pore Cleanser is the cost. I purchased a 12 oz container for $3.69 at the grocery store. Talk about cheap!
Dry, Itchy Chicks are Sexy!
I tried using St Ives Clear Pore Cleanser once per day. It left my skin tight, dry, and itchy. Thinking that, perhaps, this product would work better if I used it once every other day, I tried that too. No dice! There I was, scratching my nose. Quite attractive.
My skin is somewhat sensitive, though nothing all that unusual. That's why I was so surprised by the dryness caused by this St Ives cleanser. I am better off using plain ole' Ivory Soap. In a nutshell, this cleanser is way too harsh for my face. I cannot recommend it to you, unless you enjoy itching powder sprinkled liberally on your face.
Picture this Romantic Scene...
I leave the shower, after washing my face with St Ives Clear Pore Cleanser. I dry off, put on my comfy PJs, and sit down next to my hubby on the couch. He hands me a glass of my favorite merlot and turns on my favorite CD. He leans over to kiss me, and.....................I scratch my face
Hubby goes out the next day and buys another $28.00 tube of facial cleanser. He's no dummy.
