I have to admit that I was skeptical of this product at first. I read a very favorable review here on Epinions and was still skeptical. When I then saw the product in my local grocery store, I had it in my cart at one point but put it back on the store shelf because I didn't want to pay $3.99 for something that I didn't think I would like (yep, I'm the same person who will drop $15 for a lipgloss without giving it a thought - go figure!).
After a few more favorable reviews here on Epinions, I looked for it each week in the grocery store but it was out of stock every time. Finally, I found it one day! I put it in my cart and didn't look back. I'm so glad I did!
The Non-Descript Packaging:
Some of St. Ives' products are packaged very plainly. This is part of the reason I originally thought this product wouldn't be a good one. I figured, in the age of marketing tactics, that a product that is supposedly THAT good will certainly be packaged beautifully. This is not the case! Whipped Silk comes in a white, plastic, rounded square bottle with a flip-top, plastic navy blue cap that also screws off. In a word, the packaging is boring!
The Product:
Whipped Silk is an "intense body moisturizer", according to St. Ives. St. Ives is a company that makes various skin lotions and cleansers, as well as foot and body lotions and scrubs.
The texture of Whipped Silk isn't that much different from other lotions. What might make it appear different is the fact that the hole in the cap that the lotion comes out of is star-shaped, making the lotion come out like frosting comes out of a frosting bag with a star tip...if you squeeze the lotion out slowly. Otherwise it looks like regular lotion.
Whipped Silk comes in three scents: Soft Petal Breeze, Fresh Orchard Mist and Pure White Silk. The Pure White Silk is a softer scent, containing 33% less fragrance according to the St. Ives website. There is 14 oz. of moisturizer in each bottle.
According to StIves.com, Whipped Silk offers the following "Benefits and Features":
*Contains Moisture Guard, a patented emulsion that continuously binds moisture to the skin, forming a barrier to prevent moisture loss throughout the day.
*Hydrolyzed Silk Protein provides intense moisture to the skin, leaving it "silky" soft without a heavy, greasy feel.
*Whipped with Vitamins A & E and Panthenol for intensive, therapeutic skin moisturization.
*Formulated with Swiss Glacial Water and Swiss Botanicals for natural nourishing moisture.
*Natural enriching emollient, olive oil, improves skin conditioning and after feel.
*Unique star-shaped dispensing for a "whipped" look and feel.
Ingredients (taken from packaging):
Water, C12-15 alkyl ethylhexanoate, glycerine, stearic acid, cyclomethicone, glycol stearate, sorbitol, cetyl alcohol, mineral oil, dimethicone, dimethicone copolyol, petrolatum, steramidopropyl dimethylamine, aminomethyl propanol, hydrolyzed silk, retinyl palmitate, panthenol, tocopheryl acetate, sunflower extract, matricaria extract, sambucus nigra flower extract, primula veris extract, olive oil, PEG-7 esters, triethanolamine, propylene glycol, disodium EDTA, methylparaben, DMDM hydantoin, carbomer, magnesium aluminum silicate, fragrance, ext. violet 2, red 33, blue 1.
Directions For Use (taken from packaging):
Smooth into skin as often as needed. Daily use will prevent over-dry skin from recurring.
My Experience:
I couldn't wait to try Whipped Silk. I tried it the next morning after I showered. I was surprised at how non-greasy this product was, and how easily and quickly my skin drank it in.
The scent that my grocery store carries, Soft Petal Breeze, is of course the scent that I purchased. It has a floral scent that is very light when you smell it in the bottle, but the scent intensifies somewhat when applied to the body. It's still not a strong scent however, and is very pleasant. It does not interfere with whatever fragrance I'm wearing for that day. The color of my Soft Petal Breeze-scented lotion is a pale purple.
A little goes a long way with Whipped Silk but I still find myself using a lot - I think that is because I know that my skin will absorb all of it. My skin feels moisturized (but not greasy) all day, and definitely very soft.
This product reminds me somewhat of Bath and Body Works Silkening lotion - which contains silk as well. But the differences between the Bath and Body Works lotion and the St. Ives Whipped Silk are very great - the Whipped Silk has moisturizing and softening properties that last all day and is $3.99, while the Bath and Body Works lotion's moisturizing and softening properties do not last long at all. And the price is around $16 last time I checked (it could be higher now).
Since there is 14 oz. of lotion in each bottle of Whipped Silk, you will get a few months of use from it even if you use it every day.
I have to say that I totally believe St. Ives when they claim that Whipped Silk will prevent dry skin from recurring if this product is used every day. I don't use it every day because I like to use perfumed body lotions that match the fragrance I'm wearing, but when I do use Whipped Silk for a few days in a row, my skin is definitely less dry.
Using Whipped Silk on my hands also makes my hands feel silky, soft and smooth. The non-greasy texture makes it the perfect hand lotion.
Price and Purchasing Info:
I found my bottle of Whipped Silk for $3.99 at my local Giant Eagle grocery store (I think that the Giant Eagle chain is only in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia). I have heard that other people have found this product at Wal*Mart and K-Mart, but I have not seen it there as of yet, and also have not yet seen it at my local CVS or Rite Aid drugstores.
Since it was $3.99 at my grocery store, which typically has higher prices on health and beauty products, you can probably find this product for less at K-Mart or Wal*Mart.
