Pros: The taste isn't offensive.
Cons: It smells, and the taste it does have is nearly non-existent.
The Bottom Line: There are much better lagers out there than this one.

| thewisefool's Full Review: St. Pauli Girl Lager |
Having been born in Minnesota, land of many Germans (the city where I was born, New Ulm, has nearly 70% German ancestry per one source I read - the highest of any United States city), I couldn't resist a German beer with the title St. Pauli Girl. Would St. Paul residents be proud? Would Minnesota-born girls with some German ancestry like me be proud? I had to try out this one.
I have read positive reviews on this, and according to Crown Imports (http://www.crownimportsllc.com/ourbrands/stpauligirl.htm), this is the #2 selling German beer import in the United States. It's been national here since 1975, and many people seem to like it. Surely, then, this must be a good example of a lager, right?
Sadly, I would have to disagree.
This beer tastes more like water than nearly ever other beer I've ever tried, and I've been through a variety of lagers. They usually have a mild flavor, but I get a lot more flavor from most mass market lagers than I do this one (although it's not as lacking as Busch Light; I don't think any beer can stoop that low). In fact, upon first sip, there is virtually no flavor; you have to wait about ten seconds before some minor aftertase kicks in, and it isn't much. Even worse, this beer has an absolutely skunky smell when you first open it; the green bottle doesn't help.
The alcohol content is 4.9%, though you'd think it was about 2% with this kind of water flavor. Each beer is 148 calories, so it isn't too filling at least.
I can't give this more than two stars since it really has next to no flavor, but the taste is inoffensive enough so that it doesn't deserve one star status (I reserve one-star status for nasty-tasting beer, which to me is worse than having no taste). If you buy some of these, you'll be able to finish them, then - just don't expect anything spectacular.
Even if you're fond of lagers, I wouldn't recommend this one. When I am in the mood for that kind of beer, I'd rather have the mass market Bud Light or Miller Lite - because, as notorious as those brands are for being light on flavor, even they have more flavor than St. Pauli Girl, in my opinion.
