Pros:Vibrant ink colors, non- permanent on most surfaces, airplane safe no leakage feature.
Cons:None if you need a non-permanent ink.
The Bottom Line: A good pen for overhead film or any other surface requiring a non-permanent ink.
When I recently poked my head into the supply cabinet at work I found a new product. It was the Staedtler Lumocolour Non-Permanent Medium Point Pens 4-Pack. Curious to find out more about them, I took a pack back to my office for inspection.
Staedtler Lumocolour Non-Permanent Medium Point Pens 4-Pack
These pens come in a four pack and contain pens in red, blue, green and black. This set is a medium point set and as the name implies a non-permanent ink.
Staedtler recommends these pens for writing on paper, cardboard, film, plastic, metal, ploystyrene, glass, porcelain, wood, leather and stone materials.
The ink is water soluble and can be wiped off with a damp cloth. You can also refill these pens when the ink runs out by purchasing a refill station. The ink is also fast drying and each color is bright.
The tip on this pen has a rounded point and sticks out a bit more than most pens of this type. It may wear down with continued use.
The cap locks securely on the pens and have color coded caps and end caps on each pen.
The Staedtler Lumocolour Non-Permanent Medium Point Pens 4-Pack retails from $6.99 to $8.99 a 4-pack according to my web search. Our office supplies are purchased on state contract at a discounted price.
My Thoughts on the Staedtler Lumocolour Pens
While the main use of these pens here are with overhead films, I did find a good use for these pens in my office. I used them for writing on labels. The Avery "tab" labels are clear and a plastic surface. These pens worked very well on these and gave bright labels in different colors for different sections of files.
I wouldn't buy these pens exclusively for the above purpose, but as I said in the opening paragraph, I was curious to know more about this product because I had never seen this brand of pens before.
I like the fact that you can wipe the surfaces of films or plastics and remove the writing if you mess up. However, this doesn't work on paper because paper is absorbent. The ink also washes off your hands easily. I know this from experience, as I'm a bit messy sometimes.
The non-permanent feature is good for overhead film, allowing you to re-use overhead film as much as you want or need to. However, this wouldn't be a good feature for main class notes which need to be used over again for teaching additional classes.
Another thing that impressed me was the locking cap. This pen's tip is safely guarded with the secure lock. This feature wears out on some pen models, but this one seem to be made much better.
I was also impressed to learn from the manufacturer's website that these pens have a built in airplane-safe feature that prevents leakage when flying. They have an automatic pressure equalization feature that will not allow the ink to leak during air travel.
Recommendation
Staedtler Lumocolour Non-Permanent Medium Point Pens 4-Pack seems to be a high quality non-permanent marker from what I can see. The ink colors are vibrant and stand out. Then non-leaking feature for air travel is also nice, making this pen a good option for those that have a need for it and also travel often. Recommended: yes!
