Pros:Great for keeping cold things cold, unbreakable, scratch resistant, fun to own.
Cons:Boring because they all look alike.
The Bottom Line: I feel everyone should own at least one stainless steel mixing bowl, just for the fun of it!
I guess what type of bowl you use in the kitchen is a matter of your own personal preference. I have a slew of stainless steel bowls and find that I seldom use them, yet Im glad they are available.

To see if a bowl is truly stainless steel, try placing a magnet to it. If it sticks, well, lets just say that someone misrepresented the composition of the bowl.
Magnets will not adhere to stainless steel because of the added elements of 10 to 30 percent chromium and other ingredients that go into making it. There are different degrees of stainless, the better ones are practically indestructible.
On many of the bowls I own of this type, a magnet sticks to the bottom, indicating that it consists of another alloy, possibly giving it extra strength on the base of the bowl.
I counted today and find I have 7 stainless bowls, ranging from little to huge. The small one works with my Mixmaster®. Oh, I forgot to count the two stainless bowls that actually came with my mixer. I really like them better than the Pyrex ones the older mixer had.
Advantages of Stainless Bowls
I love stainless bowls, though, for salads. Salads seem to stay colder in them, for whatever reason. Also, filling a stainless bowl with ice for shrimp or other appetizers, is wonderful! I usually make potato or macaroni salad in my large stainless bowl. For some reason, I feel that stainless bowls are less porous, especially less porous than plastic bowls.
Another advantage is that stainless bowls are unbreakable, which means a lot when youre taking a bowl of food to a potluck supper or out into the yard for a picnic. Stainless bowls are practically weightless, which is another good point in their favor.
Stainless bowls wash up beautifully. I put mine in the dishwasher, now and then, and have had no bad effects. They are so easy to wash, though, that I seldom do that. These bowls remain shiny and pretty no matter how long you have them.
Disadvantages of Stainless Bowls
If youre cost conscious, stainless bowls are a little more expensive than Pyrex bowls, however, the price of some Pyrex bowls today makes me wonder if this is still true.
I guess what I dont care for is the noise level when youre whipping something in a stainless bowl. I always feel like Im scratching it, although they are practically unscratchable. They can be pitted, though, if youre crazy enough to use an ice pick in one.
I dont like using stainless bowls for hot foods, nor would I even think of it. They retain the heat and, to me, it would be like bringing a pan right off the stove to the table. Hot stainless bowls! Not for me.
Also, stainless bowls dont come in pretty colors. Now why couldnt someone invent a cherry-colored stainless bowl? Id buy it.
Steeling myself to end this Review
You know what? Ive come to appreciate my stainless steel mixing bowls more by having written about them. I dont know why I dont use them more often, but I do use them for certain things, as I mentioned above.
My usual mixing bowls are glass with beautiful red strawberries on them, and I enjoy looking at them so much that I overlook these wonderful stainless bowls! Its a shame.
Well, perhaps some manufacturer will read this review, and if you see stainless steel bowls with strawberries embedded in them, let me know! Ditto for cherry-colored stainless bowls.
Enjoy! You should have at least one good stainless mixing bowl in your cupboard. I hope Ive convinced you.
Thanks so much for reading.
