Pros:Flexibility, mobility, price, performance
Cons:Nothing that jumps out to me
The Bottom Line: A wonderful piece of equipment.
I am relatively new to the world of Pilates, but over the past six months have learned a few things about what Pilates is. One of the first things I learned is that you can do a lot of the exercises away from the gym, on your own.
Yes, a lot of people will tell you that you need to be in a room with 20 other people and an instructor pushing you to the brink in order to get the most out of your Pilates workouts. Don't buy this argument unless you are the type who needs to workout with others. First of all, you pay money for the class (Which is like double taxation since you are already paying for your gym membership.) and in some cases are expected to bring your own mat (More money). Secondly, Pilates does not involve a large space commitment like some exercise machines/pieces. The Stamina Pilates Performer machine is much smaller than most exercise machines and easily transportable. Finally and most importantly, the machines are not cost prohibitive. The Performer will cost you around $300 shipping included.
A lot of people wonder, "What is Pilates"? I did too. I would see a bunch of women go into a large room around 700pm each night at the gym and wonder what they were doing. Why is this "new" workout something different or special? Eventually, my curiosity got the best of me and I went in for an introduction class. Pilates is essentially (And this will not be the Webster's definition) a way to build strength and flexibility while focusing on breathing and relatively normal muscle movements. The aim of Pilates exercises is to build a strong core- back, abs, and butt.
WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THE STAMINA PERFORMER:
So, after a few weeks at the class and developing a degree of comfort with what I need to do and how to do it, I decided that it made sense to look into equipment for my new home. I am trying to eliminate gym membership expenses since I run six months a year and have an exercise bike and weights. I checked into the Stamina Pilates Performer and had clerks at two separate stores and chains recommend it. Both seemed to have a decent bit of knowledge and I took their word for it.
* The machine is mobile. The Performer has wheels which makes it easy to move into another room or a closet if company arrives. Surprisingly, the machine will also fold up for even easier storage. It is also not overly heavy- my fiance can move it. The size 16 3/4 x 85 1/2 x 20 1/4 is not overbearing.
* The Performer comes with a workout video and a color workout chart. Most of this will not be new info if you have experienced a Pilates class previously. However, it is very useful as a reminder and for beginners.
* You have four levels of resistance along with adjustable headrest and straps. The resistance allows for different of strength and the adjustable options provide for added comfort. The Performer also has oversized foam pads that provided additional cushioning.
* The Performer feels like it is a quality piece of equipment. I have not had previous exposure to the Stamina brand, but was told that it is a good line. The Performer is made with a solid steel frame (A good sign) and has a 10 year warranty on the frame and one year on parts. In other words, they are pretty comfortable that the frame will take any beating you can dish out.
* The machine provides a number of different workouts. Keep in mind that the aim is to strengthen the core of your body- not your lower legs, chest, or arms. I can do any of 32 exercises with the Performer. If I combine this with lifting and running, I get one heck of a workout in my basement.
* The price is right. I was being charged $20/month for the Pilates class that I was taking at the gym and that was in addition to the gym membership. In 15 months you will ($20/month for 15 months) break even with the cost of a class.
* Finally, the Performer is easy to use. Yes, it takes a few workouts in order to get used to the machine, but what machine does not involve a little getting used to? Once you are accustomed to the different workouts, you are on your way. Additionally, the video and chart provide a good deal of assistance in how to use the machine and what exercises to work on depending on your level of fitness.
WHAT I DO NOT LIKE:
Ok, I am really nitpicking here, but I have to list something. I am ever so slightly concerned that with all the smaller moving parts that there could be a problem down the road. Stamina has the warranty covering these parts for one year. I guess this is good, but at the same time I wonder if it is just a year because they something we do not.
A FEW THOUGHTS:
First of all, there has been a lot of press lately about the health benefits of a stronger core. One thing I have heard is that strengthening your core lowers your risk of heart attacks by removing some of the fat. This is certainly a positive.
The other thought is that a stronger core helps with a variety of athletic endevours. I play a ton of golf and have struggled, from time to time, with a stiff lower back. The Performer does a great job of strengthening my lower back without putting too much strain on it. As we all know, stronger abs also make for a better back and the Performer will work your abs until you cannot take anymore.
RECOMMENDATION:
Without a doubt, I would purchase the Stamina Pilates Performer. I have been very impressed by all aspects and truly had a difficult time finding something wrong with the machine.
