Stanley PowerLock - No Other Brand Measures Up to Stanley
Written: Oct 8, 2009
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Compact. Easy to use. Portable. Great locking device when you are working alone.
Cons:None
The Bottom Line: This tape measure is very easy to use. It should be a mainstay in everyones homes.
Every household will require a tape measure of some sort especially when doing normal household maintenance repairs. If you are replacing a garbage disposal and its surrounding piping, you must use a tape measure to measure the size that will fit under your sink as well as the size of the piping required to properly drain waste water to your sewer. For outdoor use, I could name plenty of projects where I had to use a tape measure.
STANLEY POWERLOCK 25 FOOT TAPE MEASURE
The Stanley PowerLock 25 feet tape measure is housed in a metal composition casing that has a belt hook so that you can attach it conveniently to your belt or in your took belt.
This tape measure is made of metal and is spring loaded. All you do is pull the length you require and once you are through, it will automatic rewind into its casing. It has a yellow locking tab so once you pull the length you need, you can lock in place so that you do not have to keep on unrolling the tape measure.
Another feature this tape has is that it marks off 16 inches which is a common space between studs when framing walls and floors. Every 1 foot mark is conveniently marked in red so that you know the exact length in feet (12, 24, 36, etc.)
At the beginning of this tape measure is a metal clip. If you are alone, you can use a common nail to nail into your project. Using the tip of the tape measure, you can attach the nail to this clip and pull the tape measure up to 25 feet. There is no need to have someone hold onto the end anymore. And the measuring distance is accurate too.
USE OUT IN THE GARAGE OR YARD
Typically, I use the Stanley PowerLock tape measure to measure lengths of 2x4, 2x6, plywood or drywall for various projects I do around the house. Recently I had to rebuild a wood deck in my backyard that was totally dry rotted. I pulled all the rotten wood then had to figure the quantity of 2x6 deck boards I had to order plus the framing.
Since I had no help, I had to measure the length which was under 25 feet and the width at its widest which was under 10 feet. From there, I used the tape measure to calculate the quantity if 2x6 and 4x4 beams I had to order. I was so accurate that I only had one 2x6 left over after the project was completed.
I also use this tape measure to calculate the distance to hang cupboards or cabinets as well. This tape measure can be bent at a 45º angle so that you start off at the floor and then bend it even at heights taller than yourself with no problems whatsoever.
Another great use for this tape measure is to grab things that fall behind cabinets, roll away tool boxes, items stuffed way back in hard to reach cabinets and knocking cobwebs off under eaves. Just pull out a 3 foot length, lock it and you have yourself a useful stick!
Although this tape measure comes in 30 and 50 foot lengths, most home owners will only need a 25 foot tape measure.
THE BOTTOM LINE
I am always losing my tape measure so here is a hint I use to make sure I do not lose it. I always keep one in my garage inside my tool belt which holds a lot of the tools I commonly use to repair things around the garage or yard. The second tape measure I keep inside the house in what I call my household tool box. This is the tool box I use when we have an electrical failure and holds items such as electrical fuses, lighters, matches, batteries etc.
It is almost always on my belt when I am working around the house so when I sit down, it is noticeable because it will dig into your side which tells me to put it away where it belongs.
Stanley has been a main stay in my home for several generations. I have never broken a Stanley made tape measure and highly recommend them to anyone who is into home maintenance or do-it-yourselfer like me! Believe me, this is one tool you cannot be without when you are doing repairs to your home, garage or yard.
