Rating of Stanley Bostitch (June 27, 2000)
I got one of these Stanley Bostitch pneumatic nailers at the Home Depot during a tool clearance sale. The salesman explained to me that some people would buy them, use them, and return them claiming they experienced problems when all they wanted to do was use it for their project. He also claimed all of the nailers were checked over and tested to make sure they work. I figured, why not save a hundred bucks and get one of these returned items? So I bought one.
Unlike many other pneumatic tools I purchased, this nailer jams on me constantly. It also requires a lot of air to operate it (approximately 90psi constantly), and it gives my compressor a good work out. When I first got the nailer, I decided to return it in exchange for another one, since it jammed on virtually every other nail. The second nailer performed much better, yet, it occasionally jams too.
This is a heavy-duty nailer. I use it primarily for framing and nailing 2'X4's. It is relatively an awkward and clumsy piece of equipment, and I do not always get good results. It often splits the wood, and often the nail does not drive all the way through. At first I thought it was my technique, because the nailer head would slide away when punching a nail. Then I tried my buddies Paslode nailer, and had absolutely no problems! His Paslode would hit the mark every time, not use nearly as much air, and always drives the nail through. The kicker is his nailer is 12 years old, and still performs better than mine does!
This nailer is loud, as most framing nailers are. It also tends to let a nail fly by every now and then. Be careful! Wear ear and eye protection whenever working with nailers!
Maintenance is a breeze! Simply put a couple of drops of oil into the air chamber before each use. Keep the gun clean and dry. This nailer does not come with a case like many of the other brands. I store mine in a nylon kid's back pack to keep dust and moisture off of it. Removing jammed nails can be cumbersome, and takes some time. It is important to remove the air hose when attempting to remove a jammed nail! (Guess why?)
I now know why the Home Depot was selling a bunch of these nailers on clearance. The truth is, it is a mediocre nailer, and not worth the price new. I would not recommend this nailer to anyone. Get a Paslode instead. If you get a Stanley Bostitch, make sure you do not pay full price - Home Depot has a large stock of these on clearance on a regular basis! You will need an air compressor to use it (which run from $150 to over $800 for a good one). However, with a compressor, you may run many other tools as well (e.g., spray painters, saws, drills, sanders, air wrenches, etc.) Good luck with your projects and have a nice day!
