| dlstewart's Full Review: Stanley Quick Point Knife |
Every now and then a project requires a knife for cutting. At work, Im often in need of a small knife for opening boxes or for doing other small projects. The Stanley Quick Point Knife is a handy little knife for just those occasions.
Description
The Stanley Quick Point Knife consists of two parts. 1) The knife body, and 2) the snap-off razor blade insert.
About the size of a pen, the knife measures 5 1/8" long and 5/8" wide. This is a straight knife (no curves). The coloring is Stanleys trademark yellow and black. The entire knife body is made from plastic, and the razor inserts are metal. A plastic clip on the back of the knife offers an easy way to attach the knife to a pocket.
The knife body is open in the center to show the razor blades inside. This makes it easy to know when the razor blades are running low. A yellow push lever is also in this hollow to push the razor blades in and out of the knife. The push lever is designed to lock in place once the knife position is set.
How the Knife Works
Operation is simple. A new knife comes loaded with a strip of snap-off razor blades. Just press down the push lever and move the lever toward the end of the knife where the razor blade will appear. Once the razor is extended the appropriate length, release the lever and the blade is locked into position. To reset blade placement, simply push the lever down and adjust the blade as needed. When the lever is released, the blade will once again lock into position.
The strip of snap-off razor blades contains 13 razor blades. The strip of blades is notched to easily tell where one blade ends and another begins. When a blade becomes dull, snap off the old blade with a pair of pliers. The next blade is sharp and ready for use.
Inserting a new strip of blades is simple, too. The top of the Stanley Quick Point Knife has a slot in it. Feed the replacement strip of blades into this slot, and the knife is ready to use.
When the knife is not being used, retract the blade into the knife body by pushing the lever and pulling it backward.
My Experience
Not only is this knife easy to use, but it is portable. I can tuck it in a pocket (with the blade retracted, of course!). The knife fits comfortably in my hand, too.
Each blade is sharp and produces a nice, clean cut (no jagged edges). I primarily cut light-weight cardboard with this knife. I have also used it to lightly score heavy-weight paper so that the paper is easier to fold. And in a pinch, this knife is great for slicing open cardboard boxes.
When the blade needs replacing, the knife blade is easy to snap off. I make sure to use a sturdy pair of pliers and always immediately dispose of the blades so that they will not harm anyone.
This small knife is not designed as a Utility Knife. If cutting into thick cardboard boxes, then a Utility Knife has a sturdier blade.
Care & Safety
When using the knife, hold the knife straight. Do not apply pressure to the side of the blade as it might accidentally snap off.
Do not use the knife as a prying tool. Someone at work used this knife to pry at something, and the blade chipped.
Its convenient having blades that snap off when they are dull, chipped or dirty. For instance, if the sticky film from packing tape coats the blade, snap the blade off to reveal a new clean, sharp blade.
Its a good idea to wear safety-goggles when replacing the blade on any knife. Take care when snapping the old blade off with a pair of pliers. Make sure the pliers firmly grasp the blade so that the blade does not drop or fly free.
Change the blade if it becomes dull. A dull knife requires more force to cut and can more easily slip, causing an accident.
I keep used snap-off knife blades in an empty plastic soda or juice bottle. That way no one can accidentally get hurt by loose blades.
When Im finished with the knife, I always make sure the blade is fully retracted into the knife body. If this knife is for household use, store the knife out of the reach of children and curious pets.
Purchasing
We purchased several Stanley Quick Point Knives (9mm size) at a local hardware store. They cost about $2.98. Replacement blades are available for about $7.00 for a 10-blade pack (each blade has 13 razors on it). This knife comes in two sizes, 9mm and 18mm.
