My husband and I live in a rather small apartment consisting of only a bedroom, bathroom, living room, and kitchen. Storage is a seemingly insurmountable task, with the closet and multiple cabinets filled to the brim with all sorts of personal effects. I started taking online classes in May which quickly created a new storage problem. Within a few weeks, there were binders, folders, text books, and school supplies spread across our living room. Anything I was actively working on found a home on the center cushion of our sectional couch – a convenient location unless someone actually planned to sit on it. Since furniture is positioned in a way that covers most of our wall space, a desk was out of the question. We decided to look for a filing cabinet that would look nice in our living room. We purchased the Staples Wood Veneer Vertical File Cabinet and it has become an excellent storage solution for our needs.
Assembly
Assembling our new vertical file cabinet was a tedious procedure. A large number of dowels need to be pre-inserted and glued before actual assembly occurs. It seemed as if barely enough glue was provided. It took about an hour to perform this task alone. The instructions were very clear and easy to follow, and overall assembly wasn’t difficult. Just make sure you have ample time to dedicate to this project to finish it in one sitting. Some extra hardware is included in case you lose any during assembly. This worked out well for us as my husband dropped a screw into the couch that we didn’t find until after our new file cabinet was assembled.
Design
We chose the Staples Wood Veneer Vertical File Cabinet based on its appearance and size. With wood tones dominating our living room, we felt that a metal file cabinet would have looked out of place. This file cabinet has a cherry wood tone, which matches our television stand well. The design has a very classic look to it that would fit most décor styles (perhaps not a modern style). The drawer handles are a fitting accent. The look would fit an office setting as well as it fits our living room. The cabinet is a reasonable size yet small enough to fit against the small amount of wall space we had left. It measures 27 1/8” high by 20” wide by 15 3/4” deep, preventing it from being too obtrusive in almost any space.
The cabinet is not solid wood, made from thirty percent post-consumer recycled material with a cherry finish. For $10, we purchased the extended warranty from Staples which will cover any chips that occur over the next few years.
Usage
This file cabinet has two deep drawers for storage of legal or letter size files. Frames are included to store hanging file folders and they are adjustable to either size page. I was able to effectively store files for all of my classes so far, along with text books and supplemental materials tucked next to my letter size hanging files. The drawers are sufficiently deep that I’m able to store extra pocket folders under my hanging file folders. My husband and I are contemplating purchasing another unit to give me a little more room for growth as I have more classes and paperwork.
The top drawer features a lock, which I haven’t really had a use for. The drawers slide out smoothly, even when filled to capacity. They need a bit of an extra push to close them completely. I would say the unit is quite sturdy. It’s not top quality furniture but it will last some time. The finish is probably easy to dent, though I haven’t been willing to test this supposition.
Price
The Staples Wood Veneer Vertical File Cabinet was very reasonably priced at $99, though I have since seen it on sale for $89. I would recommend it for anyone in the market for a similar file cabinet.
