Pros:Intense, great queue line, it’s Star Wars action.
Cons:The age of the flight film.
The Bottom Line: A can’t miss ride at Disneyland.
This is a flight simulator attraction at Disneyland. It is fun and exciting. In addition it is a Star Wars themed ride. When this ride was made it was made right and after all these years it really shows.
The Queue Line
This is one of the coolest Queue lines in the park. It is sectioned off into three sections. The first section, which is not always open, is a small room located to the left of the main entrance. If the wait is long or if fast pass is working then you will go through that room. It has posters on the wall and a security checkpoint on the western side. Nothing happens but it is kind of cool to see.
The second room has another control room, a large advertising screen, and R2D2 with 3CPO. The large screen shows clips of the original 3 movies and advertises various destinations that Star Tours can take you. Want to ski on Hoth? In addition you will have announcements on a PA system. R2D2 and 3CPO are trying to fix a broken down Star Tours flier. The antics of these two droids are both humorous, scary, and entertaining. Definitely a hit with the kids and kids at heart.
The third room ramps up to where you board the ship. There are two droids there that look eerily similar to a goose. They are troublemakers and are rarely on task. In addition both of them harass the individuals in line. They tried to get it to seem like they were interacting with you but it just doesnt work. So its more like listening to a funny dialogue instead of capturing your attention through interaction. At the end of this you start to board.
Boarding
If you have ridden then this will be familiar to you. They line you up in rows and you wait until the hostess comes on the screen. She instructs you on how to properly board and the dos and dont while riding the attraction.
The Ride
This ride is a flight simulator. The simulator can hold 40 people for each ride. It takes you from the space station that you are at and you hyperspace yourself to Endor, a forest moon in the sixth movie. But of course something has to go wrong and you find yourself not landing on Endor but rather flying for you life in a series of deadly situations that you get out of by the skin of your teeth.
The flight simulator itself is very well done. Unlike other cheap simulators (universal studios, Star Trek Experience) you really feel like you are flying in space. You feel yourself going back against your seat when you are going into hyperspace. You feel the craft shake when you hit or get hit.
In addition to having the craft move the lighting in the ride itself also plays a role, albeit a minor one. Just look at the lights and you will see that they flash when something flashes on screen to make it a bit more dramatic. This is certainly not realistic but it does work to heighten the excitement happening on screen.
Trivia
The two robots in the second area are actually the internal skeletons of the geese in America Sings. Just look at the feet.
If you listen carefully in the first waiting area you can hear Lucas name pronounced backwards.
The blast shield that protects the cockpit is actually a cloth, not a hard blast shield. Just touch as you enter if you are in the front row.
The light on the ceiling actually move like a real light source on an airplane.
A lot of the plants in Tomorrow Land are all edible.
A robotic trash can lurks.
This is just weird. A robotic trash can (that really does hold trash) makes appearances around the corner of Star Tours. So keep an eye out when entering Tomorrow land, it will be directly to your right and before Star Tours.
Hidden Mickeys
The only one I know of is in the introductory film, the womans hairdo.
Fast Pass
There is a fast pass station but it is only available on really busy days.
Location
Disneyland. Anaheim, California. It is located at the entrance of Tomorrow land across from Buzz light-year.
Summary
If you visit Disneyland this is one of the first rides you should take. It is exciting and a very well done ride. The queue line is unique and entertaining with something going on to entertain you. Its too bad that the other queue lines in the park arent as entertaining. The ride itself is an intense flight simulator. And while you wont go upside down, you will do pretty much everything else. Well worth a trip to Disneyland for the few Star Wars fans that havent made it to the park yet.
