| frebo3's Full Review: Star Trek |
In 1966 I was a young Army officer undergoing training in the US in preparation for 1967 deployment to Vietnam. For me the first season of Star Trek became a “must see” supplement to my studies of 20th century weapons and tactics, because Kirk’s experiences directly addressed the timeless challenges of military leadership: Formulating and executing a successful plan in the face of danger: applying professional knowledge, the specialized skills of others, and available technology to the accomplishment of the mission – usually in a hostile alien environment!
To me, no subsequent version of Star Trek has had such a high degree of verisimilitude. Over time Star Trek has devolved into “space opera”, and the current manifestation is of that ilk.
There are lots of explosions, lots of shoot outs, and one improbable sword fight – but none of this is an adequate substitute for the drama of the original series.
The plot is convoluted, a time travel/alternative universe theme is poorly structured, hand held cameras are overused, and as a juvenile car thief and adolescent brawler, Kirk is an unlikely candidate for admission to an elite national service academy – now or in the future.
