About Me: Computers and Science-Fiction - what could be more interesting?

The second item I bought (regarding tlhIngan Hol) - the second one you should buy!

Written: Jan 25 '02 (Updated Jan 26 '02)
Pros:Spoken klingon, you can actually HEAR the words.
Cons:You might not understand what has been said. Not everything is told by Michael Dorn.
The Bottom Line: Probably the second-most important item for people interested in tlhIngan Hol, it is a valuable addition to TKD, for you can hear the words and sounds.

Why I bought it

Well, as you might not know, I am learning tlhIngan Hol. Because of this, I already bought The Klingon Dictionary(TKD) some time ago. Unfortunately, TKD is 'only' a book, so it cannot 'tell' you how to pronounce the sounds of klingon. Of course, there are detailed explanations in it, but we are used to HEAR words and repeat them, not read and repeat(although when you get used to a language, you are able to tell the pronunciation out of experience).

So I bought this one. And I am glad about my decision.

Who speaks?

Well, there are two main speaker and several additional speaker. The first one might be less known to Star Trek fans, but is well-known to anyone who learns tlhIngan Hol: Marc Okrand, the inventor of this language, the second one is well-known to most Star Trek fans: Michael Dorn aka Worf.

Unfortunately, it is mostly Okrand who speaks klingon, so donīt expect Worf saying some klingon words.

Content

Conversional Klingon is supposed to be a beginners 'book', so you do not really need something else. However, it will be very helpful if you already possess a copy of The Klingon Dictionary as it will help you understand.

During the cassette, you will first hear the sounds(and be prompted to repeat) as well as some words and even simple sentences.

Every once in a while, you will get the opportunity to listen to a 'real' situation, spoken by the secondary speakers. For example: a scene in a restaurant, where a (human) tourist is surprised to find out what exactly "ghargh" (klingon speciality) is.
(Note: it IS food, though most humans prefer their food NOT moving on the plate...)

At the beginning, you even hear a typical scene where a klingon toQDuj(Bird of Prey, a ship) attacks(and enters) another (federation?)ship.
Frankly, I still only understand the final words: "tlhIngan maH!"(We are Klingons!). But I guess this will improve with time and experience...

Benefit

You might ask "So, why do I need this? I already own TKD." - that is quite a good question. In fact, there isnīt that much new data on this cassette, TKD contains alot more information, BUT, as I mentioned before, on this cassette you can hear the words AND get an appropiate translation.
(Which might not be true with movies and subtitles, or, even worse, synchronized versions.)

Disadvantage

Actually the same as the benefiz - itīs only spoken, so you might misinterpret something.
Fortunately, there is a solution for this problem: On the homepage of Klingonska Akademien(http://www.klingonska.org) you can download a transcript of this cassette. BUT to prevent piracy, you will need at least The Klingon Dictionary to get into the download area. As I said in my review about TKD, it is the ultimate resource for everyone interested in tlhIngan Hol.

Overal/last words

This one is only interesting for those who actually want to learn tlhIngan Hol, it is NOT useful to 'just listen to it'. Also, it will help if you already own a copy of TKD, as Conversional Klingon(CK) is only an excerpt of it.

If you truly want to learn klingon, you should definitely buy CK, I did.

SuvwI'pu' je', Suvan.

(Warriors, I salute you. Although this might not be an appropriate way to say goodbye in klingon, I think itīs fitting nonetheless.)
