When I watched the Utopia in action at Starbucks I immediately fell in love with it. After sampling the coffee (Mocha Sanani) I was hooked. It was the best cup of coffee I've ever tasted. Not one bit of bitterness even though it is a "bold" coffee. There were no grounds in the bottom of the carafe or in the cup, unlike my french press (my previous method to good coffee). It is easy to use and easier to clean than my french press. I don't know about the durability of polycarbonate. I would not have bought it at the regular price of $169.00. It's a wife thing. However, when I checked Starbuck's website I noticed it was on sale for $89.99 (as of 7/11/02). I could not get to the store fast enough. It takes up more space than a regular coffee maker however, it looks great sitting next to my Rancilio Silvia and Solis Maestro grinder. The assistant manager of the Starbucks was very helpful and showed me how they made the brew. They measure (weigh) .19 lb of beans and grind a little coarser than for a coffee maker but less than for a french press. He then put the grind into a bag so I could measure with my scoop at home. I also set the Maestro to grind the same consistancy. The coffe was fantastic when drank black, especially when eating Starbuck's chocolate covered blueberrys, WOW! If you grind your own beans I would suggest letting Starbucks grind the .19 lb of beans for you so you can measure and check for consistancy for yourself.
