LRGuis's Full Review: Annika Bernhard - State Birds and Flowers Coloring...
A coloring book review may seem just a bit unusual. Is a review necessary of a coloring book? Is there a decision process involved? Well, this homeschooling parent can tell you that decision processes revolve around a good many books, including coloring books priced higher than $1.
Those "in the know" are aware of the line of coloring books available from Dover. This publisher produces coloring books which educate while also providing some coloring entertainment. This entertainment, however, is not necessarily geared toward the coloring age group one may traditionally think. These are pictures with a wealth of detail, artistic renderings worthy of time invested in coloring and worthy of quality coloring materials. (In our home we love Prisma Color Pencils for the Dover Coloring Books.)
State Birds & Flowers This book came home during our study of the fifty states. Each state taken separately & studied along with their respective birds & flowers (as well as flags and the like). This 55 page book has a page for each state which includes a picture incorporating a state's given bird with its flower as well as a page for our National bird/flower
For example, page 15 is devoted to Indiana. The black and white line drawing has a write-up underneath demonstrating a big selling feature for such a book. It reads:
"INDIANA. Bird: Cardinal (see Illinois). Flower: Peony (Paeonia vars.) Shrub or perennial herb. Red, pink, yellow, white, other colors. Blossoms in spring. Many horticultural varieties. Mostly from Eurasia; two U.S. species, only in far West." (15)
Because of the detail and educational uses, the coloring book is even indexed by common name of bird or flower and then also indexed by scientific name.
Finally, the back cover (inside & outside) show each page colored by an obviously skilled illustrator. This shows the user how a particular bird and/or flower would truly appear in the wild.
An excellent book for nature lovers, for educators, home educators, or for that young artist in your life who is embarrassed to color in more traditional coloring books. The paper here is heavy, white - potentially too thin for watercolors, but markers will not seep through from one side to the other.
This is not your toddler's coloring book. ................................................... Quoted portion from: Bernhard, Annika. State Birds & Flowers Coloring Book. Dover Publications. New York, NY. 1990. 15.
