So my wife brought home this bag of dog food and the second I read “If your dog likes Pedigree Large Breed, TRY THIS!” I knew there was going to be trouble. The ingredient list left me with a puzzled look on my face and my wife shrugging her shoulders. The food consists of medium-sized kibble with ball-shaped and bone-shaped bits.

It has really gotten to the point where I don’t want my wife to buy anything for the dogs and I want to spend the extra money to stock up on ACTUAL “premium” dog food.


INGREDIENTS:

ground yellow corn, meat and bone meal, ground wheat, wheat middlings, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, animal fat (preserved with BHA and citric acid), animal digest, salt, potassium chloride, choline chloride, zinc sulfate, vitamin E supplement, color added (yellow #5, red #40, blue#2), ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, L-lysine hydrochloride, niacin, copper sulfate, vitamin A supplement, manganous oxide, biotin, d-calcium pantothenate, vitamin B-12 supplement, thiamine mononitrate (B1), pyridoxine hydrochloride (B6), menadione sodium bisulfate complex (vitamin K activity), riboflavin supplement (B2), sodium selenite, calcium iodate, folic acid, vitamin D3 supplement, cobalt carbonate

Really? The inexpensive feed-grade CORN is the first ingredient? Dogs can’t process corn and usually develop scratching problems due to allergies. Ground wheat causes digestive upset, allergies and feeds arthritis. Wheat Middling are defined as sweepings off the floor that cause allergies and digestive upset. Corn gluten is a waste product - a cheap, non-nutritive filler but used as protein source which can cause allergies and sugar imbalance. Bone meal can lead to digestive issues. By-products are the internal organs, beaks and hooves of dead animal - ground up and used as cheap filler. If those animals happened to have any diseases or cancerous tumors, those are then passed onto your animal(s). BHA is known to be a highly carcinogenic chemical preservative. Dogs don’t need salt in their diets and can lead to hypertension. Animal digest is used as a flavor enhancer and is rendered animal tissue, including rancid or diseased parts. Dogs are color blind – so why use color dyes that can cause health issues?

FINAL WORDS:

There should be a law against companies using the word “premium” on any dog food or treat that uses cheap and carcinogenic fillers. This “food” is nowhere near premium and rates about the same as Pedigree and Ol’ Roy on the poor nutrition scale. This product is better kept in a storage container in a fallout shelter is case of an emergency or catastrophe and your pets are starving. 1.25 stars out of 5.

Because of the fact that my wife mixed this food in with a bag of Evolve and the remnants of the last bag of Nature's Recipe Chicken & Oatmeal that was already in our food container, I can't really comment on how this food specifically affected our three German Shepherds. Mixed with other food, our dogs did eat all of the contents in their bowl each time. I noticed no change in their eating behavior nor did I notice any irregular intestional issues. I would surmise that long-term use of this food by itself would have the bad effects on our animals.

While I think this particular dog food is garbage, I wasn't about to simply throw it all in the trash. My opposition to this low level of food is warranted, but one bag mixed in with other higher-quality dog food is not going to harm my animals. Maybe one day my wife will become as much a dog food label reader as I am and purchases of this kind of food will cease.
