| schroeder360's Full Review: Steinway Model D |
I do not personally own this piano. However, I have played on so many of these, I feel more than qualified to give my opinion of them.
Whenever I have the opportunity to perform somewhere, I always take a sigh of relief when the piano is a Steinway. Unless it was restored from some fire or flood (freak accidents which I just made up), these instruments are always outstanding (and even after being restored, they still usually blow the competition away).
Their sound is one of a kind. In fact, I would say that the definitive piano tone should be based on that of a Steinway. It is perfectly suited to concert pianists, but also shines in every other genre of music. Often Korean pianos are used for more jazz-oriented music, due to their brighter sound. So of course it is a matter of taste (as music always has been and will be).
This particular model, the D, is the grand-daddy of their grand piano line-up. At just shy under 9 feet, it is an imposing sight on any stage. When seated at the keyboard, the strings seem to extend out towards infinity, just as the sound produced therein tends to do. No matter what setting the instrument is in--on a stage, or in a storage room--I always love to sit at these behemoths and belt out incredible bass octaves like no other instrument can. It provides a visceral thrill unlike any other piano can.
The technical features of Steinways are also top-notch. I have played few that have not had excellent actions with perfect consistency. If it has been written for piano, a Steinway can handle it. I have been playing on them since I started 12 years ago, and they have always been my favorite. Wherever good pianists are, Steinways just seem to follow. Practically all major universities have them, nearly all concert halls, and around 90% (I'm not completely certain on that figure, but trust me, it's close) of all sponsored artists are Steinway Artists. This has nothing to do with agressiveness on the part of Steinway, either. Pianists just play on what they like, and they like Steinways.
As far as a financial investment is concerned, this piano is so much better than a comparably priced Mercedes or Yacht. At anywhere from $80,000 to $90,000, it is extremely expensive. However, unlike the other two extravagantly expensive items mentioned, a Steinway will appreciate in value. It is like a safe stock purchase that will continually provide a profit yet you will also have a fine instrument at your disposal.
I personally own a Boston grand piano. I did not see this listed as a choice to review, but when it becomes available, I will write a review on that instrument.
