The Bottom Line: This book has great moral quality about accepting strangers and also teaches that bats aren't as bad as they seem. I would like everyone to read this.

Let me state first before starting this opinion the importance of bats. Without bats the world would become over run with insects and the deadly diseases that they carry. Bats eat up to three times their body weight in insects per day. Mostly this diet consists of mosquitos which could present hazard to humans should they over populate. There is only one blood sucking bat in the world. This bat is not agressive and actually drinks while it's victim is asleep. The bat is so gentle the victim never awakes until natural wake up time.
That being said , I hope people can enjoy the story more whom bats creep out.
Stellaluna is a beautiful story with a great ending. The artistry is the best I have seen in a very long time. The pictures are more quality and realistic than cartoon like. I feel this gives the book a more genuine appeal. It almost seems as though the story really did happen.
Stellaluna was originally published in 1993. The author and illustrator is Jane Cannon. The original book contains information about bats children should find fascinating. My copy is in a compiled book of children's stories. The hero of this story is a fruit bat. Fruit bats have keen vision and smell unlike other bats.
The story starts off somewhat pitiful. A giant owl attacks the baby bat ( Stellaluna ) and her mother. The momma bat carries her baby while searching for food. The owl knocks the baby from the mother. The mother doesn't know what has happened to her baby and goes home distraught.
The bat landed in a nest of baby birds . The mother of the birds adopted her. Poor Stellaluna had to do things like birds from that point on. Bird thing are very hard for bats to do! Like sleeping right side up. She even had to eat bugs and she was a fruit bat.
One day when they were all old enough to fly Stellaluna got lost. She fell asleep hanging by her thumbs as she had promised mother bird not to hang upside down. Some other bats flew by and saw her hanging right side up which is upside down to a bat and this caused a humorous stir.
The really best thing to this book is the ending. Since it is a children's book I will tell you. Stellaluna finds her mom. The bats and the birds remain life long friends.
The author to this book is a self taught artist. She did a great job on the illustrations in this book. She has three books published to date that I know of including VERDI .
I hope you enjoyed my opinion and I really hope you read this book to your kids. In my opinion it will become a classic. Thanks for reading! Caroline
