| MADYL's Full Review: Stila Eye Shadow - Singles |
Last January, I was introduced to Stila eye shadows during a makeover. Prior to the makeover, I wasnt that interested in eye shadow (Ive always been more interested in lipstick and preferred muted eye shadows, such as Lancome or Clinique). Since then, Ive had five Stila makeovers at their counter, purchased 12 single shadows, four shadow trios, one shadow duo and the Convertible Eye Color. I have to admit that I am addicted to Stila eye shadows!
Stila (pronounced Stee-lah) was created by celebrity makeup artist Jeanine Lobell in 1994. Lobell works with celebrities such as Reese Witherspoon, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz. I like most of the products (with the exception of a few), but I strongly believe that Stilas eye shadows are one the best on the market.
Stilas shadows have the best texture of any shadow I have ever used. They are very soft and feel smooth and silky on my lids. They are easy to blend, highly pigmented and long wearing (they dont crease on my oily lids like most brands). I enjoy playing around with my Stila eye shadow brushes and creating a look (I ended up purchasing two Stila brushes for eyeliner and shadow and I love them. They make me feel like an artist!) Stila shadows never fail me! You can build the color up without looking overdone. The shadows are intended to work wet or dry. I just wet my brush for the darker shade to create soft eyeliner. Its that easy. No wonder this eye shadow was listed as one of InStyle Magazines best beauty buys for 2002.
Stila markets their shadows in several forms. Each eye shadow is sold individually in 2 forms: a shadow pan ($14) and a shadow pot ($16). If you collect the colors, you can purchase a palette (I have an 8 pan palette and a 4 pan for travel and Stila also sells a six 6 pan palette) and use the pans. Since I have the palettes, I prefer the pan to the shadow pot (although the eye shadows from the pots can also be removed from the pot to fit in the palettes). I dont care for the shadow pot packaging, since the silver cardboard like packaging for the shadow pots can look dingy after a few months in your makeup bag. You get the equal amount of product in the shadow pan or the shadow pot form.
Colors
The color selection is enormous (over 50 shades to choose from) and the colors are absolutely gorgeous. I truly believe that there are several colors suitable for any woman of any age with any skin tone or type. There are so many colors avaliable, and I will list the ones I have or tested. Keep in mind; I wear cool and neutral tones, so I have more experience with those shades.
I am now the proud owner (turned collector) of the following Stila Single shadows:
Chinois - This is a soft cream color that I use as a shadow primer all over the lid. This is beautiful for blending all over.
Moonlight - Pearl white shimmery shadow for the brow bone. This also looks great under the eyes to add a hint of shimmer. My only word of caution with this shade is since you can build up the color, you can over do it, you will end up with the glittery little mica particles everywhere, so dont use a heavy hand with the application.
Kitten This is a shimmery champagne-pinkish beige colored, great for day or night, and to use as a highlighter. (The Stila rep also recommended that I add a pinch to a moisturizer for my face for a body shimmer). Kitten also seems to go with any other shades that I own (cool or warm) and makes my dark eyes stand out more. Its unusual, because shimmer shadows never appealed to me before I tried this shadow. This is also subtle enough for someone beyond their 20s.
Eden - This is a matte mauve-beige with a creamy texture which is ideal for a daytime look.
Viola - This is a gorgeous color. It's a subtle, muted, mauve color. I like the consistency and texture. The shadow is easy to blend, its long wearing, and the application is smooth. This goes great with Chinois and Kitten. (I wear this in my crease). This is a beautiful daytime look!
Poise - Deep violet color that I use as a liner usually with viola on the lid.
Wheat - This is a soft beige with khaki undertones that blends beautifully in the crease.
Dahlia - This color is a deep grape purple color. It will probably last me for a million years since I only use it for lining the eye since it is so dark. This works beautifully wet or dry.
Grace - This is a pretty medium shimmery brown shade with mauve undertones.
Puck - This is a medium sheer taupe-plum.
Barefoot Contessa This is darker plum with slight gold shimmer
Indigo - This is an indigo blue/navy shadow that I use for liner. Since I use so little, this will last for quite some time.
Ingredients Include: talc, zinc stearate, magnesium carbonate, dimethicone, nylon-12, tocopheryl acetate, ethylhexyl palmitate, mineral oil (paraffinum liquidum), lauroyl lysine, methylparaben, propylparaben
