Bijou's Full Review: Stila Precious Pearl Palette 6 Pan Eyeshadow (Mult...
On a quest to update my fall 2009 makeup bag, I discovered a gem: Stila Precious Pearl Eyeshadow Palette. Six iridescent colors awaited me in a sleek, mother-of-pearl case. A $130 value, for a sale price of $20 on Sephora.com? Sold!
The Case
Stila is known in the beauty industry for having quality, trendsetting products. This eyeshadow palette is no exception--packaged in an attractive silver case topped with real mother-of-pearl inlay, it immediately caught my eye. It is easy to open with a touch of a button and a hinged case. At about four inches long, the slim palette can fit easily into a small evening bag. When you hold the case, you'll notice it's nice weight--it doesn't feel cheap or poorly put together. I love the mother-of-pearl on its top; the twelve, pearlescent squares have a beautiful shine when they hit the light. Once the eyeshadows are all used, the case could be repurposed to hold medication, chewing gum, or other small trinkets. The case also features a wide mirror under its lid to make on-the-go application easy.
The Colors
Open up the case, and you'll find six notable eye colors in a white, pink, rose, blue, green, and gold. Each color is a generous size--not a "sample" sized product--and each shimmers from the addition of genuine crushed pearl. According to Stila, the genuine pearl not only provides a beautiful finish, but it also softens and nourishes the skin. The glitter finish of each color is very fine, though, and not big "flakes" of glitter that I've found in eye makeup that is marketed for teens or in cheaper products.
Each color included in the Stila Precious Pearl Eyeshadow Palette has its own nuance, but they all apply with rich color and a smooth finish. The white shadow has a gold shimmer and would be a wonderful eye highlighter (in the corners of the eye or on the brow bone). The pink is a soft, light color that shimmers with white and pink pearl. Used over the whole eyelid, it really brightens the whole eye. The rose eye color is a deeper pink that can compliment a variety of skin tones with its pink/ gold shine. I can imagine wearing this to work--it is a daytime-friendly hue, but it definitely could be layered for an evening look. I love the navy/ purple hue--since purple is in this fall season, it will be fun to wear the dark blue color. Because I love experimenting with eye color, I would wear this blue hue day or night. The green shadow is nothing short of gorgeous--it reminds me of a mermaid; emerald, shimmery, luxurious. This color would look fantastic with a tan, and it definitely plays up my green eyes. The gold shadow, deep and rich, is a fun color to layer. It's a gold lingering on the edge of bronze. Each of the colors feels silky and looks fabulous. You can fiddle with the colors by blending to make different shades that work for you--for example, the mid-tone pink and the white, when blended, make a sheer wash that brings out the yellow flecks in my eyes.
The Wear
I have sensitive eyes and this shadow collection has not bothered my eyes at all. I've carefully applied them with a high-quality eye brush and made sure to minimize a lot of dust from the brush before I apply the color. Note: the compact does not come with an applicator. The pigment makes it easy to create a subtle or more dramatic look; I've been pleased with how long the color stays put on my eyes. If you apply an eye shadow primer prior to using the color, your shadow will be easy to apply and long-lasting. Yet even without a primer, I didn't have creasing or blotchy eye color. I tend to use my finger to apply the white shadow for a highlighter, and I've had good wear results even with my primitive application. After several hours in a workplace, touch ups may be necessary--but the compact is so portable and the mirror makes it easy to add a bit of color.
Because the first ingredient listed is talc, people who are sensitive to it should be wary. Pearl powder is listed as one of the ingredients as well--and that shine from the pearl has garnered me several compliments, especially when I wear the green color.
Overall, Stila has managed to do it again--create an affordable, high-fashion color palette that will compliment all skin tones and upgrade any cosmetic bag with its vintage-inspired mother-of-pearl case. The Stila Precious Pearl Eyeshadow Palette is a limited edition, and these particular eye colors are not available as single purchases, so get to shopping!
