grays's Full Review: Malika Oufkir and Michele Fitoussi - Stolen Lives:...
This book was chosen for a book club I am in by one of our members. I was weary to read it, simply because I am very sensitive to sad stories, I hated Angela's Ashes. But this book, is a story of suspense and triumph. I loved it. I couldn't put it down. I read stayed up late at night to finish it.
The book is the Malika's story, a girl raised as a princess in Morocco who became a political prisoner at age 19 along with her mother and five siblings after her father was assasinated.
The first part of the book reads like a fairy tale. It describes her life as a princess, which is incredibly interesting. You learn to love her in the first few pages.
The second part of the book is about their imprisonment which is hard to read, simply because it is emotionally heart-wrenching. But in the end, you see how the human spirit triumphs over adversity.
The third part of the story is about the escape. It is a classic thriller, full of suspense that keeps the pages turning. The whole time I was reading it I kept having to remind myself this was a true story, since it reads like a Tom Clancy suspense thriller.
Overall, this book was wonderful. I loved Malika. I admire her greatly, please pick up this book and read her story. You'll be richer for it.
